Golf Courses Near Tokyo: Three Day Trips by Train

A course can be close to Tokyo and still be difficult to book. Check who can make the reservation before choosing the train. Wakasu is the clearest example: its main lottery is restricted to people who live or work in Tokyo, even though the course is a short shuttle ride from Shin-kiba.
These three options suit different outings: a through round in Saitama, golf within Tokyo, or nine holes in Chiba. This is a desk-researched access and booking guide, checked against course operators on 1 November 2026; it is not a ranking based on rounds we have played.

Which course fits your day?
Start with Koshigaya if you want a full round without a scheduled meal break. Consider Chiba Shimin if you want nine holes. Put Wakasu on the list only after resolving its reservation requirements.
Station transfers are separate from the train journey. Check the bus for your play date, including the return trip.
| Course | Route after the train | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Koshigaya, Saitama | Yoshikawa south exit → club bus, about 15 minutes | You want 18-hole through play and the dated bus fits |
| Wakasu, Tokyo | Shin-kiba → club bus, about 10 minutes | You want 18 holes in Tokyo and meet the booking conditions |
| Chiba Shimin, Chiba | Chiba/Tsuga → bus to Onaridai Shako → three-minute walk | You want nine holes with walking self-play |

Choose the row you can actually reserve, then price the complete outing. These are course options, not a promise of English-language booking or available tee times.
Koshigaya Golf Club: start here for through play
PGM describes a flat layout with ponds, creeks and bunkers in its course introduction. Choose it for the through-play format, not on the assumption that flat means hazard-free.
PGM lists Koshigaya among its casual-style courses, with through play rather than a scheduled restaurant stop halfway round. That makes it useful when golf has to fit into one Tokyo-based day. It does not guarantee an uninterrupted round or a precise finish time: play ahead and the booked plan still matter.
From Tokyo Station, one rail option is the Keihin-Tohoku Line to Minami-Urawa, then the Musashino Line to Yoshikawa; compare it with routes from your own hotel using JR East’s network map. The course’s club-bus information gives a roughly 15-minute ride from Yoshikawa Station’s south exit, on the JR Musashino Line. Services vary by season. Open the timetable linked from the official course page and check your exact date rather than saving a departure time from an old review.
Book the golf first, but verify the transport before completing payment. An early slot is no use if the first train from your hotel misses the shuttle. For solo play, use the operator’s designated one-person reservation route and read its minimum-participant rule; booking one place is not the same as buying a private round.
PGM’s course calendar is the source for the date’s total. Check whether lunch, lockers and rental equipment are extra, and what happens if your group becomes smaller. We have not substituted an old advertised starting price for a live quote.
Wakasu Golf Links: convenient access, conditional booking
The Tokyo tourism board identifies Wakasu as an 18-hole seaside course. It is a full course on the waterfront, rather than an urban driving range. That setting is a reason to consider it once the booking works, not a reason to skip the eligibility check.
Wakasu’s current reservation page distinguishes the main lottery from vacancy bookings. The lottery account is for Tokyo residents or workers. Its application period runs from the 15th of the month two months before the play month to that month’s end. A visitor staying in a Tokyo hotel should not assume this meets the eligibility requirement.
The separate web vacancy system opens at 15:00 on the first day of the month before play. Before relying on it from overseas, ask the course whether you can register with your contact details and book for your actual group. Do not use the older “same date one month ahead” instructions still discoverable in search as the current main process.
For access, take the Keiyo Line, Yurakucho Line or Rinkai Line to Shin-kiba. The course shuttle takes about 10 minutes. Its published outbound timetable runs from 06:10 to 09:40, and it does not need a reservation. Check that your particular play format includes shuttle access: special early or twilight plans can have different conditions. At Tokyo Station, allow time to reach the Keiyo platforms rather than treating the station as one short interchange.
The published fee table lists regular weekday self-play at ¥12,450 per person, or ¥21,450 on weekends and public holidays, based on four players, with food separate. These are not the separate self-day meal-inclusive prices. Three-player supplements apply, and two-person reservations are not accepted. Rental clubs and shoes are available in limited quantities; reserve them when confirming the round. Prices were checked on 1 November 2026.

Chiba Shimin: a nine-hole alternative
Chiba Shimin’s course profile describes a nine-hole, par-36 course of 3,055 yards, with walking self-play, supervised by professional golfer Shingo Katayama. This is a useful alternative when you do not want to commit to 18 holes. It is open to people from outside Chiba City too; “Shimin” does not mean visitors must be city residents.
The official access instructions use a bus from JR Chiba or Tsuga to Onaridai Shako (御成台車庫), followed by a three-minute walk. From Tokyo Station, the Sobu Rapid Line provides the rail approach to Chiba; check the train destination and any onward connection if using Tsuga. This is a public bus, not a dedicated golf shuttle. Check the departure, journey and return connection for the day you book; do not infer the whole journey from the short final walk.
For a general adult aged 18–69, the October–December fee schedule totals ¥4,380 on a weekday or ¥6,410 on a weekend/public holiday, before a pull cart. The usual pull-cart charge is ¥220, making those examples ¥4,600 or ¥6,630 with it. Different seasonal and age categories apply. Repeating the course for 18 holes costs extra; the lower headline number is not an 18-hole price.
Use the official reservation page to register and choose a slot. If you need a ride-on cart, call: the course says these must be arranged by telephone, not through web booking. Confirm club and shoe rental as well rather than assuming a cart reservation includes equipment.
Build the day backwards from the tee time
Use this sequence before committing:
- Confirm a slot for your group, its cancellation deadline and the total per person.
- Confirm the required clubhouse arrival time. As a planning buffer, aim to be there at least 45 minutes before the tee time unless the course requests earlier; that is our allowance, not a published requirement for all three courses.
- Work backwards through the shuttle or public bus to a train you can reach from your hotel. Save the correct station exit and pickup map.
- Check the last practical return connection. Leave your evening flexible rather than promising a restaurant a finish time the course has not guaranteed.
Driving can simplify carrying bags, but compare parking, tolls and rental costs with the train. Wakasu is about 3km from Shin-kiba IC; Chiba Shimin lists Kaizuka and Yotsukaido ICs at 8km, and Omiya IC at 7.5km. Those final distances are not forecasts for the whole drive from Tokyo. Check the day’s road conditions before choosing the car over a confirmed train-and-bus connection.
Equipment, clothing and first-round questions
Ask for the rental set’s handedness, shaft and shoe size, not simply “clubs available.” Bring balls and a glove unless the booking explicitly includes them. Confirm dress rules for both arrival and play with the course; a casual-style description is not a universal clothing waiver.
If nobody in the party has played a full course before, start with a lesson or practice session and ask the course whether your group is ready for its pace requirements. A flat course is not automatically an introductory lesson. For clothing, our Japanese activewear guide helps separate training collections from everyday sportswear, but the course’s dress rules come first.
Can an overseas visitor play without a Japanese membership?
The practical question is whether the course accepts your reservation and group on the chosen plan, not whether every Japanese golf course follows one rule. Chiba Shimin is public; Koshigaya has operator booking routes; Wakasu has the specific lottery restriction explained above. Contact the shortlisted course if its form requires local contact details. Do not invent an address to get past registration.
Can you book for two people or play alone?
Do not assume so. Wakasu does not accept two-person reservations in its regular fee conditions. Koshigaya’s dedicated one-person route has plan-specific conditions, and other courses may pair players or apply supplements. Confirm the exact plan before booking transport for a couple or solo outing.
