For a student in Japan aiming at a US college in September 2027, the application season is already under way. The first deadlines are on 1 November 2026, and most of the rest fall in the first half of January.

This calendar gives the dates for the colleges Japanese families ask about most, checked on each college's own admissions pages in October 2026. Dates can change, so confirm each one on the college's site before you submit.

The four kinds of deadline

  • Early Action (EA): apply early, hear in December, and you are not obliged to attend. MIT uses this.
  • Restrictive or Single-Choice Early Action (REA, SCEA): also non-binding, but you may not apply early to other private US colleges. Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford use this.
  • Early Decision (ED): binding. If you are admitted, you must enrol and withdraw your other applications. Most liberal arts colleges use this, some in two rounds, ED I in November and ED II in January.
  • Regular Decision (RD): the main round, with deadlines in January and decisions from March to early April.

Early decisions at all five come out in mid-December. Princeton's financial aid application is due 9 November for early applicants and 1 February for regular ones. Yale, Stanford and MIT require SAT or ACT scores, and Harvard asks early applicants to sit the tests by the end of October.

Amherst's financial aid application is due 13 November for Early Decision and 15 January for Regular Decision. Bowdoin's is due 15 November for ED I, 5 January for ED II and 1 February for Regular Decision. Carleton's aid materials are due with the application. Williams's admissions pages could not be checked directly in October 2026, so confirm its dates on williams.edu.

What the time difference means

On the Common App, a deadline is 11:59 pm in the applicant's own time zone, not the college's. Stanford says the same about its deadlines. For a student in Japan, that means 11:59 pm Japan time on the deadline date. It's the same calendar day as in the US, but you have no extra hours.

Don't leave it to the last evening. Common App advises submitting well before the deadline in case of computer or connection problems.

5 December 202620 November24 November18 December

Harvard says early applicants can still use the November test; check each college's policy. The 5 December test is the last one most students can use for the January deadlines. Register early, because test centre seats are limited.

Early Decision and financial aid

Early Decision commits you before you can compare offers. If your family needs aid, that matters:

  • Run each college's net price calculator before you apply ED.
  • If the aid offered is not enough, colleges generally release you from the commitment, but you lose the chance to compare.
  • Some colleges award most of their international aid in the regular round. Carleton says it admits only a few exceptionally qualified international scholarship applicants through Early Decision, defers many to Regular Decision, and advises international aid applicants to apply in the regular round.

The Grew Bancroft Foundation, a Japanese scholarship for liberal arts colleges, requires Early Decision for most of its scholarship types, to the partner college it nominates. See scholarships for studying abroad for that and the other Japanese scholarships.

From a Japanese high school

  • Transcripts and references have to be in English. Ask your school early in the autumn of your final year, because schools in Japan get these requests in batches.
  • Midyear report: colleges ask for your final-year grades so far, usually in February. Stanford's is due 15 February.
  • Decisions arrive in March, when Japanese universities are announcing their own results. Students who apply in both countries need a plan for which offer to accept, and when.

FAQ

When is the first US college deadline for fall 2027? 1 November 2026, for early applications to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and MIT. Most liberal arts colleges' Early Decision deadlines are on 15 November; Amherst's is 9 November.

Is the deadline in US time or Japan time? On the Common App, it's 11:59 pm in your own time zone, so Japan time for a student in Japan.

Can I apply Early Decision to more than one college? No. Early Decision is binding, so you can apply ED to only one. You can apply to other colleges in Early Action or Regular Decision, unless the ED college says otherwise.

What is the last SAT for January deadlines? 5 December 2026. Registration closes on 20 November, and late registration on 24 November.

Should I apply early if I need financial aid? Be careful with binding Early Decision. Some colleges, including Carleton, award most of their international aid in the regular round.
