Arrive at Toshogu in October expecting maples and you will find green ones. Nikko spans about 1,000 metres of altitude, so the color starts on the high plateau in early October and takes five or six weeks to come down to the shrines.

Logistics are in the Nikko day trip guide. The rest of the country is in the 2026 foliage forecast.

What to see (realistic day, not a fantasy checklist)

A day holds two blocks: the shrines in town (Toshogu, Rinnoji, Futarasan) and the lake up the mountain (Chuzenji, Kegon Falls). In October the color is up at the lake; from early November it is in town. Spend the morning where the color is.

The Akechidaira ropeway and an onsen on the way back fit only if you skip something else. Shrine etiquette covers Toshogu.

How to get there from Tokyo

Tobu Railway from Asakusa (and connecting limited expresses) is the classic tourist route. JR works from Tokyo Station for pass holders.

Leave Tokyo early. On peak weekends from mid-October to early November the Irohazaka road up to Lake Chuzenji is congested from 9am to 3pm, worst between 2pm and 3pm. Nikko City's own tourism site warns that the usual 20-minute climb can take more than three hours. That is not traveller folklore.

If you drive, there are two realistic windows: before 7am at weekends, or after 3pm on a weekday. The ordinary plan — leave the city at nine, arrive before lunch — lands in the worst of it. The Kirifuri Highlands, Kawamata, and Sanno Forest Road routes skip Irohazaka, but they are a different day out, not a shortcut to the lake.

The bus from JR Nikko Station to Lake Chuzenji takes about 45 minutes in normal conditions, with extra services in peak season. It still uses the road, so it is not immune — but you are not the one driving. Nikko City recommends buying bus tickets on your phone in advance, which cuts the station queue. The fix if you take the bus is the same: be up the mountain before 9am, or start down before 2pm.

Check the queue and the color status on your phone at Tobu-Nikko before you choose which way to go first. Install a travel eSIM before you fly so that works the moment you land (best eSIM for Japan, setup guide). The full day-trip guide covers passes and ticket types.

Budget ballpark: transport ¥5,000–10,000+ round-trip depending on limited express choices; shrine entries extra; lunch ¥1,000–2,000.

DIY vs guided

DIY wins on weekdays when you want flexible photo stops and speak enough English/Japanese to navigate buses.

A guide or private day wins on peak Saturdays, with kids/parents, or when you want shrine context without decoding every sign.

Sample autumn day timeline

Start where the colour is. In October that is the lake; from early November it is the town. Do not climb at noon.

October (colour at Chuzenji)

TimePlan
6:00–7:00Leave Tokyo. If driving, be on Irohazaka before 7am
9:00–12:00Chuzenji, Kegon Falls
12:00Lunch in Okunikko — after 1pm you queue
by 14:00Start down. Miss this and you are in the 2–3pm peak
afternoonToshogu — still green in October

November (colour in town)

TimePlan
7:00Leave Tokyo
9:30–12:30Toshogu / shrine cluster
after 15:00Lake only if you still want it. Weekday after 3pm is the other quiet driving window

Overnight in Nikko is worth it if you want dawn lake color without the Tokyo commute. Rakuten Travel lists about 80 hotels and ryokan in Nikko.

Crowds and etiquette

  • Peak weekends bring queues at Kegon Falls and at the bus stops
  • Stay on the paths; drones are restricted in many zones
  • Shrine photography rules vary — follow posted signs
  • Cedar pollen and damp stairs: wear grip shoes
