Most bad autumn days in Hakone are lost in the same place: in the queue to get into Hakone-Yumoto, before you have seen a single maple.

From Tokyo, Hakone looks like an easy day trip, and on most days it is. But one road and one mountain railway climb the same narrow valley from Yumoto, and on a November weekend a large share of Greater Tokyo is trying to use them at the same time.

For the national picture see the 2026 autumn foliage forecast. For Hakone in general, see the Hakone guide. Other autumn trips near Tokyo: Mount Takao, Nikko and Kawaguchiko.

The colour moves downhill

Hakone spans a lot of altitude, so its peak is spread across six weeks. This is Hakone Navi's area-by-area guide (Odakyu Hakone Group, published 29 September 2026), condensed:

AreaWhere to lookPeak
Sengokuhara / Lake AshiWetland Botanical Garden, Yama no Hotel, TogendaiLate Oct – early Nov
Owakudani – SounzanAlong the Hakone RopewayEarly – late Nov
Gora / KowakudaniHakone Museum of Art, Horaien, ChoanjiEarly – mid Nov
Gora (later spots)Hakone Open-Air Museum, Hakone Gora ParkMid – late Nov
Hakone-Yumoto / TonosawaHakone Yuryo, Tenseien, HatsuhanaLate Nov – early Dec

So match the area to your dates rather than asking when Hakone peaks:

  • Early November: go high (Lake Ashi, Sengokuhara, Gora). Yumoto is still green.
  • Late November: go low (Yumoto, Tonosawa) plus Gora Park. The top is fading.

The Hakone Museum of Art is closed for renovation until 29 October 2026, and its moss garden peaks in early to mid-November, so it reopens straight into its best weeks. Confirm the reopening on the museum's own site before you go.

The weekend you can't see from abroad

Japanese public holidays don't show up in most trip planning, and they decide what Hakone feels like:

DateWhat it isEffect
Tue 3 NovemberCulture Day. Add the Monday and it becomes a four-day weekendBusy at the top (Lake Ashi, Gora)
Sat 21 – Mon 23 NovemberThree-day weekend (Labour Thanksgiving Day)Lands on Yumoto's peak. Likely the busiest days of the season

If your dates are flexible, choose weekdays the week before that weekend, or weekdays in early December. Yumoto still has colour then, and the roads are close to normal.

Traffic: the official numbers

Hakone Navi publishes where the roads jam and when:

SectionNormalCongestedWhen
Route 1, Iriuda → Hakone-Yumoto (inbound)~5 min30–60 min9am – 3pm
Route 1, Miyanoshita → Hakone-Yumoto (outbound)~15 min30–60 min3pm – 6pm
Owakudani car park (junction to entrance)~15 min30–60 minWeekends and holidays

All three are worst on weekends and holidays. The pattern: get through Yumoto before 9am, and be down from Miyanoshita before 3pm, or stay up until after 6pm.

Don't drive up to Owakudani

If you rented a car, Owakudani's car park runs 9am–4pm and the entrance queue alone can take an hour. Hakone Navi's own advice is to park at a ropeway station and ride up instead:

  • Togendai — ¥1,000 per visit, about 40 spaces
  • Ubako — free, about 90 spaces
  • Sounzan — ¥1,000 per visit, about 100 spaces

Owakudani is an active volcano area. The Japan Meteorological Agency has had Hakone at alert level 1, the lowest, since 7 October 2019. Check the ropeway's operating status on the day.

Train or car

The train is more predictable. The Hakone Tozan line from Odawara to Yumoto runs up the same valley as Route 1, but road traffic doesn't hold it up.

Above Yumoto, though, the trip is a chain of switchback train → cable car → ropeway → lake boat, and one queue backs up the rest. The crowds run the same way as the road traffic: up in the morning, down in the afternoon. Arriving early in Yumoto avoids both.

The Hakone Free Pass covers the train, cable car, ropeway, pirate ship and buses. The Romancecar limited express fee is extra. Buy that seat ahead for an early departure, because on a holiday weekend the morning trains are the ones that fill.

This whole plan depends on checking things on the move: the ropeway status, the day's congestion, the next train down. A Japan eSIM installed at home (Airalo or Saily) means you aren't looking for WiFi at Gora station at 2:45pm. Setup takes a few minutes: how to set up an eSIM in Japan.

A day that works

Day trip from Tokyo

  1. In Hakone-Yumoto by 8–9am. An early Romancecar, or the Shinkansen to Odawara and the Tozan line up.
  2. Morning: go up. Early November: Lake Ashi and Sengokuhara. Late November: Gora Park or the Open-Air Museum.
  3. Spend the middle of the day up high. The later you head down, the more of the 3pm traffic you meet.
  4. Start down around 2pm. After 3pm, Miyanoshita to Yumoto jams.
  5. Do Yumoto last. In late November its riverside and garden colour is the reward for the early start.

Staying the night

If you are spending a night in a ryokan anyway, stay in Gora or Miyanoshita, above the bottleneck. Your morning starts above the traffic and you can ignore the 3pm rule. For the 21–23 November weekend, book well ahead: the ryokan guide covers what to expect and how to book.

FAQ

When do Hakone's autumn leaves peak in 2026? It depends on the area: Sengokuhara and Lake Ashi in late October to early November, Gora and Kowakudani in early to mid-November, and Hakone-Yumoto from late November into early December (Hakone Navi, 29 September 2026).

When is Hakone most crowded in autumn? Saturday 21 to Monday 23 November 2026, a Japanese three-day weekend that falls on Yumoto's peak.

How bad is the traffic? On busy days, Route 1 into Hakone-Yumoto takes 30–60 minutes between 9am and 3pm, against about five minutes normally. Coming down from Miyanoshita takes 30–60 minutes between 3pm and 6pm.

Is Hakone worth it as a day trip in autumn? Yes, if you are in Yumoto by 9am and start heading down by about 2pm. Otherwise you spend much of the day in queues.

Does the Hakone Free Pass include the Romancecar? No. The Romancecar limited express fee is charged separately.
