Autumn in Japan 2026: peak fall foliage (koyo) hits Tokyo around mid-November and Kyoto in late November. The season runs from October through early December depending on region and altitude. If cherry blossom season is Japan's soft-focus romance, autumn is its full saturation — temples framed in crimson maples, mountain valleys on fire with color, and crisp air that makes every walk feel cinematic.

This is when Japan earns its reputation as a four-season destination. Here's when to go, where to see the best foliage, and how to plan around the crowds.

When Is Autumn in Japan? (2026 Forecast)

Japan doesn't have a single autumn peak — it sweeps south to north and low to high elevation over six weeks.

| Region | Peak Foliage Window | Best Week (Estimate) | |--------|---------------------|----------------------| | Hokkaido | Early–mid October | Oct 10–20 | | Nikko / Mt. Takao | Late October–early November | Oct 25–Nov 5 | | Tokyo | Mid–late November | Nov 15–25 | | Kyoto | Late November–early December | Nov 20–30 | | Osaka / Nara | Late November | Nov 20–28 | | Hiroshima / Miyajima | Mid–late November | Nov 15–25 | | Kyushu | Mid–late November | Nov 15–25 |

These are estimates based on historical patterns. Actual peak depends on temperature — a warm October delays colors; an early cold snap accelerates them. Check the Japan Meteorological Corporation koyo forecast starting in September for weekly updates.

2026 planning note: Late November in Kyoto overlaps with fewer domestic tourists than cherry blossom season, but international visitors increasingly target koyo weeks. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead for Kyoto and Nikko.

Best Fall Foliage Spots in Tokyo

You don't need to leave the city for autumn color — Tokyo's parks and gardens go spectacular in November.

Rikugien Garden

A Edo-period strolling garden in Komagome. Maple trees around the central pond, evening illuminations during peak season (mid-November to early December). Arrive at opening (9am) to avoid tour groups.

Entry: ¥300. Peak: Nov 15–25.

Koishikawa Korakuen

One of Tokyo's oldest gardens, near Tokyo Dome. Compact but dense with maples. Less crowded than Rikugien.

Entry: ¥300. Peak: Nov 15–25.

Meiji Jingu Gaien (Icho Namiki)

The ginkgo avenue — 146 trees lining a 300-meter road, turning gold in late November. Tokyo's most photographed autumn scene. Free to walk.

Entry: Free. Peak: Nov 20–30.

Shinjuku Gyoen

Massive park with Japanese, English, and French garden sections. Maples, ginkgo, and chrysanthemum displays. One of the best half-day autumn walks in the city.

Entry: ¥500. Peak: Nov 15–28.

Mount Takao

90 minutes from Shinjuku. Mountain hiking with temple shrines and maple-covered slopes. Cable car available for those who don't want the full hike. Weekends are packed — go weekday.

Entry: Free (temple ¥400, cable car ¥490 one way). Peak: Nov 5–20.

Best Fall Foliage in Kyoto

Kyoto is Japan's autumn capital. Every temple competes for the most dramatic maple backdrop.

Tofuku-ji

The Tsutenkyo Bridge over a valley of maples — the single most iconic autumn view in Japan. Expect serious crowds. Go on a weekday at 8:30am opening.

Entry: ¥600. Peak: Nov 15–30.

Eikando Zenrin-ji

Known as "Momiji no Eikando" (Maple Temple). Night illuminations during peak season are stunning. One of Kyoto's most popular autumn spots.

Entry: ¥600 (¥600 extra for night viewing). Peak: Nov 15–30.

Kiyomizu-dera

The wooden stage overlooking maple-covered hillsides. Beautiful during the day; special autumn night opening with illuminations.

Entry: ¥400. Peak: Nov 20–30.

Arashiyama

The Togetsukyo Bridge area plus the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji temple garden. Combine with a Kyoto day from your itinerary. Less crowded than central temples if you walk the river path north.

Entry: Tenryu-ji garden ¥500. Peak: Nov 20–30.

Daigo-ji

A sprawling temple complex in southeast Kyoto. The Sanboin garden and mountainside pagoda surrounded by maples. Underrated compared to Tofuku-ji — fewer crowds, equally beautiful.

Entry: ¥1,500 (full complex). Peak: Nov 15–28.

If you're deciding between cities, our Kyoto vs Tokyo comparison covers when each shines — autumn is Kyoto's season.

Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto

Nikko — Toshogu Shrine set against cedar forest turning gold and red. Kegon Falls surrounded by autumn color. Easy day trip from Tokyo.

Miyajima (Hiroshima) — Itsukushima Shrine with maple-framed torii gate. Momijidani Park has 200 maple trees. Combine with Hiroshima for a 2-day side trip.

Lake Kawaguchiko — Mt. Fuji with autumn foliage in the foreground. Best on clear days in early November before heavy snow.

Kamikochi (Nagano) — Alpine valley with dramatic mountain autumn. Late September to mid-October peak. Requires more planning but rewards with Japan's most dramatic landscape color.

Nara — Todai-ji and Nara Park with deer among golden ginkgo. Less intense than Kyoto but quieter and charming.

How to Avoid Autumn Crowds

Go on weekdays. Saturday and Sunday at Tofuku-ji or Rikugien is shoulder-to-shoulder. Tuesday morning is a different experience.

Start early. Temples open at 8–9am. First hour is manageable even at popular spots.

Visit second-tier spots. Daigo-ji over Tofuku-ji. Koishikawa Korakuen over Rikugien. The color is just as good; the crowds aren't.

Consider early November in Nikko or Mt. Takao instead of late November in Kyoto. Earlier peaks, fewer international tourists.

Book accommodation early. Kyoto hotels fill by September for November dates. Budget options disappear first.

Autumn vs Cherry Blossom: Which Season?

| Factor | Cherry Blossom (Spring) | Autumn (Koyo) | |--------|------------------------|---------------| | Peak window | 1–2 weeks | 3–4 weeks | | Crowds | Extreme | High but manageable | | Weather | Mild, unpredictable rain | Cool, crisp, clear | | Best city | Tokyo | Kyoto | | Cost | Highest season | High but slightly less | | Vibe | Celebratory, hanami parties | Contemplative, scenic |

Both are worth experiencing. If you're choosing one trip, autumn gives you more flexibility on timing and slightly less chaos.

What to Pack for Autumn in Japan

  • Layers. Mornings are cold (5–10°C), afternoons warm (15–18°C). Pack a light down jacket or fleece.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. You'll walk 15,000+ steps daily on temple grounds and park paths.
  • Camera or phone with good low-light performance. Night illuminations at temples are spectacular.
  • Scarf and light gloves. November evenings are cold, especially in Kyoto.
