April is the month everyone wants and almost nobody plans correctly. The first week is peak cherry blossom — the most expensive, most crowded stretch of the Japanese travel year. The last few days are the start of Golden Week 2027, the most expensive domestic travel week of the year.

Between them sits roughly three weeks of excellent weather, thinning crowds, and normal prices that most itineraries skip straight past.

Weather: the best walking month

April is arguably Japan's most comfortable month. Tokyo averages roughly 10–19°C, Kyoto similar, and rainfall stays moderate until the end of the month. Days are long enough for a full sightseeing schedule without the humidity that makes June onward punishing.

You still want layers early in the month — an early-April evening in Kyoto is genuinely cold — but by mid-April a light jacket covers it. This is the month where a 20,000-step day is pleasant rather than an ordeal.

The north lags: Tohoku is cool through April, and Hokkaido doesn't feel like spring until May.

The first week: peak sakura, peak everything

Tokyo's cherry blossoms typically peak March 28 – April 5, with Kyoto and Osaka a few days behind. If you're in either city during that window, hanami will define your trip.

Practical notes for the peak week:

  • Lodging books out 4–6 months ahead and prices at roughly double shoulder rates.
  • Kyoto's later-blooming varieties (weeping cherries, yaezakura) run a week or more past the main peak, which makes Kyoto the better salvage option if your dates slip.
  • Petal-fall in the days after peak is less crowded and, to a lot of people, more beautiful than full bloom.
  • Peak week is decided day by day off bloom trackers and crowd reports, so arrive with data already working — a Japan eSIM (Airalo or Saily) installs at home over Wi-Fi and is live when you land.

Full timing detail, spot-by-spot, in the 2027 cherry blossom guide.

The middle: April 8–27, the actual value window

This is the part worth arguing for. After the blossoms drop in Tokyo and Kyoto, three things happen at once: international sakura tourists leave, prices fall back to normal, and the weather keeps improving.

What's still on:

  • Tohoku blooms. Hirosaki Castle in Aomori peaks mid-to-late April and is one of the genuinely great sakura sites in the country — roughly 2,600 trees, moats carpeted in petals — with a small fraction of Kyoto's crowd.
  • Wisteria starts. Late April brings wisteria (fuji) tunnels into bloom, most famously at Ashikaga Flower Park north of Tokyo — a different and arguably more surreal flower spectacle than sakura.
  • Everything normal is quieter. Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, the Tokyo museums — all noticeably calmer in mid-April than in either bookend.

If you want one recommendation from this entire guide: book April 10–25 and skip both bookends. Same weather, much lower cost, and northern Japan is peaking.

The last days: Golden Week begins

Golden Week 2027 starts Thursday, April 29 (Shōwa Day) and runs through May 5. Because only one working day (Friday April 30) sits inside the block, a single day of leave produces a seven-day break — so domestic participation will be unusually high.

That means: shinkansen reserved seats gone within hours of opening (exactly one month ahead), peak lodging pricing nationwide rather than just in tourist cities, and serious expressway congestion on the 29th and 30th.

If your trip ends before April 28, none of this affects you. If it straddles the 29th, plan around it — the Golden Week 2027 guide covers the specifics.

Other things April brings

  • New fiscal and school year. April 1 starts Japan's business and academic year — you'll see suited new graduates everywhere in the first week, and cities feel busy in a domestic rather than touristy way.
  • Takayama Spring Festival (mid-April) — one of Japan's most elaborate float festivals, in the Gifu mountains.
  • Ski season ends. The highest Hokkaido and Nagano resorts run into early May, but April is the tail.

Sample April trip shapes

Sakura trip (March 30 – April 7): Tokyo, then Kyoto as the peak shifts west. Book by November 2026.

Value trip (April 12–22): Tokyo → Tohoku (Hirosaki for late sakura) → back. Excellent weather, northern bloom, normal prices.

Flower trip (April 20–28): Tokyo base, day trips for wisteria at Ashikaga and late blossoms, out before Golden Week starts.

FAQ

Is April a good time to visit Japan? It's the best weather month of the year. The question is which part of April — the first week is peak sakura pricing, the last few days are Golden Week, and the middle is excellent value.

Will I still see cherry blossoms in mid-April 2027? Not in Tokyo or Kyoto — they finish around April 5. But Tohoku (Hirosaki, Kakunodate) peaks mid-to-late April, and Hokkaido goes into early May.

When exactly does Golden Week 2027 start? Thursday, April 29. It runs through Wednesday, May 5, with only Friday April 30 as a working day inside the block.

How far ahead should I book April 2027? For the first week (peak sakura), four to six months. For mid-April, one to two months is usually fine. For the April 29+ Golden Week window, book as early as you can.

What's the weather like in April in Japan? Tokyo averages roughly 10–19°C with moderate rain — comfortable for long walking days. The north stays cooler; Hokkaido is still cold through the month.

Is mid-April really quieter than March? Yes, noticeably. Once the mainland blossoms drop, international sakura traffic leaves and prices normalize while the weather continues to improve — it's the most underrated stretch of the Japanese spring.
