How to Buy Shinkansen Tickets in Japan (2026)
How to buy Shinkansen tickets: station machines, Midori-no-Madoguchi counters, SmartEX and JR East online, reserved vs unreserved, and JR Pass limits.

You can buy Shinkansen tickets at station machines with English menus, at Midori-no-Madoguchi JR ticket offices, or online via SmartEX and JR East — and foreign credit cards usually work. Pick reserved, unreserved, or Green Car; know that the Japan Rail Pass generally does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho. For the classic Tokyo–Kyoto hop, pair this with Tokyo to Kyoto transport and the JR Pass worth-it math.
Official portals: SmartEX (English) and JR East Multi-Language. Digital pass holders should also read the JR Pass QR / digital guide.
Where to Buy
Station ticket machines
Large JR stations (Tokyo, Shinagawa, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, etc.) have touchscreen machines with English. Select Shinkansen, date, train, seat type, then pay. Receipts and tickets print immediately; some corridors now lean toward QR / e-ticket displays — follow on-screen instructions.

Typical adult one-way examples (ballpark, ordinary car): Tokyo → Kyoto often lands around ¥13,000–¥14,500 depending on train and reserved vs unreserved. Always confirm the machine total before paying.
Midori-no-Madoguchi (みどりの窓口)
Staffed JR ticket counters. Best when your itinerary is complex, you need paper trail help, or machines confuse you. Expect queues at peak travel seasons. Bring passport if you are exchanging or activating certain passes.
SmartEX (Tokaido / Sanyo / Kyushu corridors)
Book Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen online in English at smart-ex.jp/en. Register, buy, ride with a QR ticket on your phone or a linked IC workflow depending on the product. Excellent for Tokyo–Nagoya–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima planning from a hotel Wi-Fi session.
The hotel Wi-Fi caveat is the real constraint. Booking and changing a reservation on SmartEX means being online at the moment you want to move a train, which is rarely when you are sitting in your room. If you expect to shuffle Shinkansen times mid-trip rather than lock the whole itinerary in advance, a travel eSIM is what makes that possible from a platform bench. Either way, screenshot the ticket once it is issued.
JR East online / apps
For Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku (via East products), and other JR East Shinkansen, use JR East’s multi-language site: jreast.co.jp/multi/en. Product names and seat maps differ slightly from SmartEX — buy on the platform that matches your route.
Travel agencies
Hotel concierges and agencies can book for a fee. Useful if you want zero friction; unnecessary once you have used a machine once.
Reserved vs Unreserved vs Green Car
| Type | What it means | When to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Unreserved (自由席) | Sit in free cars; find any open seat | Off-peak, short hops, flexible |
| Reserved (指定席) | Assigned car/seat | Peak days, groups, peace of mind |
| Green Car | Premium carriage, nicer seats | Long rides, work, quieter cabin |
Price gap — Reserved usually adds roughly ¥500–¥2,000+ versus unreserved depending on distance; Green Car adds more (often ¥4,000–¥8,000+ on longer Tokaido runs). Exact surcharges print on the machine.
Boarding tip — Car numbers are painted on the platform. Stand in the correct queue before the train stops.
JR Pass and Nozomi / Mizuho (Read This)
Nozomi (Tokaido/Sanyo fastest) and Mizuho (Sanyo/Kyushu fastest) are not covered by the pass on its own. Since October 2023 you can ride them by buying a special Nozomi/Mizuho ticket for each journey (¥4,960 Tokyo–Shin-Osaka). Pass holders take Hikari, Kodama, Sakura, Hayabusa (as applicable), and other covered services — slightly slower, still fast.
If your pass does not cover Nozomi, do not board hoping staff will “understand.” Buy a separate full-fare ticket or take a covered train. Details and price math: JR Pass worth it 2026 (Ordinary prices rise October 1) and digital QR pass guide.
Payment, Timing, and E-Tickets
Foreign credit cards — Visa/Mastercard commonly work on machines and SmartEX. Have a backup card and some cash for stubborn terminals.
Same-day vs advance — Same-day unreserved is fine midweek outside holidays. Reserve ahead for Golden Week, Obon, year-end/New Year, and Friday evenings on Tokyo–Osaka.
E-ticket / QR trends — Online bookings increasingly use QR codes at ticket gates or reserved-seat readers. Screenshot a backup; keep phone battery alive. Paper tickets still exist from machines and counters.
IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) — Great for local trains; they do not replace a long-distance Shinkansen base fare by tapping alone. You still need a Shinkansen ticket (or pass). See Suica / Pasmo guide.

Quick Buy Flow (Machine)
- Choose English → Shinkansen.
- Enter date, origin, destination.
- Pick train time and seat type.
- Confirm price → pay by card/cash.
- Take tickets (or save QR) → go to the Shinkansen gate → match car number on the platform.

FAQ
Can I buy Shinkansen tickets the same day? Yes, especially off-peak. Reserve ahead for major holidays and busy Friday nights.
Do foreign credit cards work? Usually yes on machines and SmartEX. Carry a backup payment method.
Does the JR Pass cover Nozomi? Usually no. Use Hikari or Kodama (or other covered trains) instead, unless you hold a product that explicitly includes Nozomi/Mizuho.
What’s the difference between reserved and unreserved? Reserved guarantees a seat. Unreserved means you sit in free cars if space remains.
Is Green Car worth it? On long daytime trips if you want space and quiet. Skip it for short hops.
Should I use SmartEX or a station machine? SmartEX is convenient for advance Tokaido/Sanyo plans; machines are perfect for same-day flexibility at the station.
