The shinkansen is the right choice for almost everyone. Tokyo to Kyoto takes 2 hours 15 minutes and costs ¥14,170 — city center to city center, no security lines, seats bigger than business class on most airlines. Buses are for budgets under ¥5,000. Flights don't make sense on this route at all.

The Shinkansen: What to Know

Nozomi vs Hikari vs Kodama:

• Nozomi — fastest (2h 15m), most frequent (every 10 minutes), NOT covered by the standard JR Pass
• Hikari — 25 minutes slower, covered by the JR Pass
• Kodama — stops everywhere, 3h 50m, never take this to Kyoto

Buying tickets:

1. Ticket machines at any JR station — English interface, takes cards. Buy same-day except during peak seasons
2. SmartEX app — book reserved seats from your phone, load the ticket to your IC card
3. Ticket offices (Midori no Madoguchi) — humans, English signage, good for complex itineraries

Reserved vs unreserved: Unreserved (cars 1–3) saves ¥850 and works fine off-peak. During cherry blossom season, Golden Week, and autumn, reserve — standing for 2+ hours is real.

Luggage note: Bags over 160cm (combined dimensions) require a reserved "oversized baggage" seat — book it when you buy. Standard suitcases under that fit fine overhead.

The Mt. Fuji seat: Sit on the right side (seats D/E) heading to Kyoto for Fuji views around 40–45 minutes after leaving Tokyo. Clear winter days are best.

Is the JR Pass Worth It?

Since the 2023 price increase (7-day pass: ¥50,000), the math changed. Run your actual route:

• Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo: ~¥30,000 → Still not worth it

Alternatives to the full pass: Regional passes (JR Kansai, JR East) cover smaller areas at much lower prices and are often the smarter buy.

The Overnight Bus: The Honest Version

Willer Express and JR Bus run nightly Tokyo→Kyoto services. ¥4,000–¥8,000 depending on seat class and day of week.

What ¥4,500 gets you: A reclining seat, curtain, blanket, and 7 hours of intermittent sleep. Arrive at Kyoto Station around 6am.

What ¥7,500 gets you: A "3-row" premium seat that reclines nearly flat, with a hood/canopy. Actually sleepable.

Worth it when: You're on a tight budget (saves the train fare AND one hotel night), or every hotel is booked during peak season.

Not worth it when: You have fewer than 7 days in Japan. The recovery time eats the savings.

Day-Of Logistics

From your Tokyo hotel: Shinkansen leave from Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station. From Shibuya or Shinjuku hotels, Shinagawa is usually faster to reach — one Yamanote ride, no station maze.

Arriving at Kyoto Station: Buses and the Karasuma subway line connect to everywhere. Most Kyoto hotels are 10–20 minutes away. Ask your hotel which exit — Kyoto Station is massive.

Timing: Trains run roughly 6am–9:30pm, every 10 minutes. You never need to plan around a schedule except the last train.

Do I need to book shinkansen tickets in advance? Off-peak, no — buy at the station 20 minutes before. During cherry blossom season, Golden Week, Obon, and New Year, book reserved seats 2–4 weeks ahead via SmartEX.
