Kawaguchiko: Fuji Up Close

How to get there: Highway bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) is the simplest DIY move: about two hours, roughly ¥2,000–¥2,500 each way. Book a morning seat. By train, the Fuji Excursion limited express runs direct from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko in about two hours, with only a few departures each morning, so reserve ahead. The JR Pass covers only the JR section as far as Otsuki; the Fujikyu line beyond it is paid separately.

What to do:

• Lake Kawaguchi shoreline — Walk or rent a bike; morning light is kinder than midday haze.
• Chureito Pagoda (Fujiyoshida) — The five-story pagoda with Fuji behind it. Arrive early; the climb is short but the viewpoint packs out fast.
• Ropeway / viewpoint stops — Useful when visibility is good; pointless in thick cloud.

Budget ballpark: ¥2,000–2,500 each way for the bus, plus lunch and local transport. Keep cash for small vendors.

Reality check: A cloudy Kawaguchiko day is mostly a lake day. Check a Fuji visibility forecast the night before and have a Tokyo backup (museums, neighborhood walking) if the mountain disappears.

Hakone: The Classic Loop

How to get there: Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, about 85 minutes (reserve a seat). The Hakone Freepass (¥7,100 for two days from Shinjuku, per Odakyu) covers the Odakyu line and the loop transport (mountain train, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi cruise and buses). It does not cover the Romancecar: that seat is ¥1,200 extra each way.

What to do:

• Gora → cable car → ropeway over Owakudani (black eggs, volcanic valley)
• Lake Ashi cruise
• Day-use onsen if your hotel isn’t in Hakone — check tattoo policies ahead (onsen etiquette)

Budget ballpark: ¥7,100 for the Freepass, ¥2,400 for Romancecar seats both ways, plus lunch and onsen fees.

Hakone is the better “one day, many textures” trip. Fuji is a bonus, not the only reason to go.

DIY vs Tour

DIY wins when: You speak enough English/Japanese to navigate stations, you like flexible photo stops, and you can leave Shinjuku by 7:30–8:30am.

A tour wins when: You have one fixed day, you hate transfers, you’re traveling with kids or parents, or you’d rather sleep on the bus than decode bus boards at dawn.

• Leave early. Both routes punish late starts.
• Check Fuji cams / forecasts the night before and again at breakfast.
• Layers. Lake wind and ropeway stations are colder than Shinjuku.
• Cash + IC card. Buses and small lunch spots still lean cash-friendly.
• Don’t combine Kawaguchiko and Hakone in one day. You’ll mostly see highways.

Tour day: Meet in central Tokyo → guided loop → drop-off evening. Use the tour when logistics are the bottleneck, not when you need maximum wandering time.
