Tokyo has more great restaurants than beautiful ones. Most of the best cooking happens in small rooms on the fourth floor of an office block. This list is the other kind: places where the room, the garden or the building is reason enough to go.
We picked six, across four kinds of beauty: a garden, a view, old wooden Tokyo and modern design. Every price, opening time and booking rule below was checked on each restaurant's own site in October 2026. One famous name is missing on purpose: Tofuya Ukai, the tofu restaurant in a garden beneath Tokyo Tower, closed on 31 March 2026 after about twenty years. Many lists still include it.
Cheapest way in, tax included. The two hotel restaurants add a 15% service charge.

If you have one meal to spend on a setting, the garden lunch at Mokushundo is the best value of the six. If you want a view of the city instead, go to New York Grill at lunch, when the windows show you Tokyo in daylight and the bill is less than half of dinner.
A garden: Mokushundo, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo

Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo is a large hotel built around an old hillside garden, and Mokushundo (木春堂) sits at the back of it, among the trees. It serves stone-grilled kaiseki: you cook beef and vegetables on slabs of Mt. Fuji lava stone at the table. Five historic houses in the garden are used as private rooms.
- Lunch: 11:30 to 14:30 last order on weekdays, 15:00 at weekends and on holidays. From ¥6,800 on weekdays and ¥9,800 at weekends.
- Dinner: 17:30 to 20:00 last order. From ¥13,000.
- Closed: Mondays, except holidays. From January 2027 it opens on Mondays too.
- Extras: prices include tax, but a 15% service charge is added, and the private rooms have a room fee.
- Book: the hotel's restaurant reservation line, 03-3943-5489 (10:00–19:00), or the Mokushundo page.
- Getting there: about 10 minutes on foot from exit 1a of Edogawabashi Station on the Yurakucho Line, mostly uphill.
Arrive early and walk the garden before you eat. For more of Tokyo's gardens, see our Tokyo gardens and parks guide.
A view: New York Grill, Park Hyatt Tokyo

New York Grill is on the 52nd floor of the Park Hyatt, at the top of the Shinjuku Park Tower: an open kitchen, a long dining room and the city below the windows. The hotel reopened on 9 December 2025 after a 19-month renovation. Its New York Bar is the one from Lost in Translation. Our Park Hyatt Tokyo review covers what guests say since the reopening.
- Lunch: daily, 11:30 to 14:30 last order. The weekday lunch is ¥9,900.
- Dinner: daily, 17:30 to 22:00 last order. The four-course dinner is ¥22,000, and ¥8,800 adds three glasses of matched wine.
- Extras: prices include tax; a 15% service charge is added.
- Dress code: no beach sandals, sportswear or sleeveless tops, and no shorts from 5:30pm.
- Book: through the New York Grill page or on +81 3 5323 3458.
The steaks are where the bill climbs: the lunch menu lists supplements of up to ¥26,950 for a Kobe sirloin. The set lunch is the way to see the room without that.
Modern design: Toraya Karyo, Akasaka

Toraya, the Kyoto maker of Japanese sweets, opened in Tokyo in 1869 and has been in Akasaka since 1879. In 2018 it replaced its Akasaka building with a low-rise one designed by the architect Hiroshi Naito, holding the shop, a gallery, a workshop and the café, Toraya Karyo (虎屋菓寮). The café serves Toraya's sweets with tea, and seasonal meals and udon at lunch.
- Hours: 11:00 to 17:30, last order 17:00. Lunch dishes are served 11:00 to 14:00.
- Closed: the 6th of every month, except in December.
- No reservations. Join the queue online through AirWait from 11:00 to 16:00, or at the shop from opening (9:00 on weekdays, 9:30 at weekends). If you are called and not there within 15 minutes, you lose your place, so keep your phone on and online (best eSIM for Japan).
- Address: Akasaka 4-9-22, 7 minutes from exit A of Akasaka-mitsuke Station. Details on Toraya's Akasaka page.
This is the cheapest beautiful room on the list: you can sit in it for the price of a sweet and a cup of tea.
Old Tokyo: Botan, Kanda

Botan (ぼたん) has served one dish since 1897: chicken sukiyaki, made with thigh, breast, gizzard, heart and liver and cooked at your table. The wooden house it uses was built in 1929, and Chiyoda City lists it as an important building for the area's townscape.
- Price: chicken sukiyaki, ¥8,000 per person. Fried chicken is ¥1,000 and rolled omelet ¥600. The meal ends with rice or oyakodon made in the same pan.
- Hours: 11:30 to 21:00, last entry 20:00.
- Closed: Sundays and public holidays.
- Book: by phone, 03-3251-0577.
- Address: Kanda Sudacho 1-15, 2 minutes from exit A3 of Awajicho or Ogawamachi stations. Details are on Chiyoda City's tourism page.

Old Tokyo: Kanda Yabu Soba

Near Botan, Kanda Yabu Soba (かんだやぶそば) is a soba house in a line that goes back to the end of the Edo period; it says it is in its 144th year. The whole building was renewed and reopened in October 2014, and the ground-floor dining room is surrounded by garden greenery. Sit downstairs.
- Price: seiro soba, ¥1,320; duck soba, ¥3,190.
- Hours: 11:30 to 20:00 last order.
- Closed: Wednesdays.
- Book: the ground floor does not take bookings; the second-floor private rooms take reservations for set courses. See the Kanda Yabu Soba site.
- Address: Kanda Awajicho 2-10.
Botan and Kanda Yabu are in the same corner of Kanda. Have soba for lunch and come back for sukiyaki at night.
Old Tokyo: Komagata Dozeu, Asakusa

Komagata Dozeu (駒形どぜう) opened in 1801 and still serves the dish it started with: dozeu nabe, small loach fish simmered in a shallow iron pan, piled with green onion. The front is a classic Edo merchant house, with no windows on the street side of the upper floor so that no one looked down on a passing lord's procession. The building burned in the Second World War and was rebuilt in the same style.
Inside, the ground floor is an irekomi tatami hall: you sit on the floor along long wooden boards that serve as tables, facing a small courtyard. The basement and second floor have chairs if you prefer them.
- Price: dozeu nabe, ¥3,480; dozeu soup, ¥350.
- Hours: 11:00 to 20:30, last order 20:00.
- Closed: a few irregular days a month. In November 2026 they are the 17th, 24th and 26th. Check the Komagata Dozeu site before you go.
- Book: online through the restaurant's site.
- Address: Komagata 1-7-12, Taito, just south of Asakusa. See our Asakusa guide for the rest of the day.
Booking and etiquette
- Book the three that take reservations as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for weekends: Mokushundo, New York Grill and Botan.
- Phone bookings are in Japanese. If that is a problem, ask your hotel's front desk or concierge to call for you.
- Cancel if your plans change. Small restaurants in Japan lose real money on no-shows.
- Take your shoes off for Komagata Dozeu's ground-floor tatami hall. Wear socks you are happy to show.
