Golden Week Japan 2027: Dates, Worst Days and Booking Dates

Golden Week 2027 has a calendar shape that should worry you: Thursday April 29 to Wednesday May 5, with exactly one working day trapped in the middle. Friday, April 30. Take that single day off and you get a seven-day run — which means a very large fraction of Japan's working population will be doing exactly that, all at once.

If you're planning to be in Japan that week, this is the single most important scheduling fact of the spring.

The 2027 Calendar, Precisely

DateDayHoliday
April 29ThursdayShōwa Day (昭和の日)
April 30FridayWorking day — the only one in the block
May 1SaturdayWeekend
May 2SundayWeekend
May 3MondayConstitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日)
May 4TuesdayGreenery Day (みどりの日)
May 5WednesdayChildren's Day (こどもの日)

Compare that to a bad Golden Week year, where holidays scatter across midweek and the block fragments into separate long weekends. 2027 doesn't fragment. It's one continuous wall of demand from April 29 through May 5, with a soft edge on the 30th.

What That Actually Means for You

Shinkansen seats. Reserved seats open exactly one month before departure, and the Tokyo–Kyoto and Tokyo–Osaka runs on the first and last days of the block sell out within hours of opening. Going by JR Central's reservation reports for 2025 and 2026, the worst train days in 2027 should be Saturday May 1 (outbound) and May 4–5 (return), so be ready at 10am on April 1, 4 or 5; our worst days to travel in 2027 list has the detail. Unreserved cars exist but expect to stand for the full three hours on peak days — see how to buy shinkansen tickets for the mechanics.

Hotel pricing. Rates across the country move to peak pricing, not just in the tourist cities — domestic travelers spread out to onsen towns, coastal areas, and rural destinations that are otherwise cheap. There is no "escape to a quiet town and save money" play during Golden Week.

Highways. If you're renting a car, the expressway traffic reports during Golden Week are genuinely notorious — 30km+ jams on the main arteries out of Tokyo and Osaka on the first and last days. Travel midweek within the block, not on the edges.

What's closed. Banks and government offices close for the holidays. Most restaurants, shops, and attractions stay open — this is a travel holiday, not a shutdown like New Year. Some small family-run businesses close for the whole week, which mostly affects rural areas and specific restaurants you might have planned around.

The Cherry Blossom Question

A common planning mistake: assuming Golden Week and sakura overlap. On the mainland, they don't. Tokyo and Kyoto finish blooming in early April — by April 29 you're three to four weeks past peak.

Hokkaido is the exception. Sapporo's bloom runs into early May, which lands squarely inside Golden Week. That's genuinely appealing, and it's also why Hokkaido gets a disproportionate share of the domestic holiday traffic that week. If that's your plan, book earlier than you think you need to. Full timing detail in the 2027 cherry blossom guide.

Children's Day and Why There Are Fish Everywhere

May 5 is Children's Day (こどもの日), and the visual signature is koinobori — carp-shaped windsocks flown from poles and strung across rivers, one per family member, sized by seniority. The carp is the symbol because of an old legend about a carp swimming upstream and becoming a dragon: persistence, then transformation.

Some of the best displays are the mass river installations — hundreds of streamers strung bank to bank — which are genuinely worth a detour if you're already somewhere rural that week. Families also display kabuto (samurai helmets) indoors and eat kashiwa mochi, rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves.

It's one of the few times a Japanese holiday produces a large, obvious, photographable visual change to the landscape, and it's almost entirely free to see.

Should You Just Avoid It?

Avoid it if: you're price-sensitive, you want the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route, or crowds meaningfully degrade your trip. The week before (April 19–28) and the week after (May 6–15) are dramatically cheaper and calmer for essentially the same weather.

Come anyway if: your dates are fixed, or you actively want to see Japan at its most festive. Golden Week is a genuine cultural spectacle — matsuri, koinobori, packed parks with families — and "quiet" isn't the only reason to travel.

If you're stuck inside it: stay put. Base yourself in one city and do day trips against the flow (out of the city on the days everyone's coming in). The pain of Golden Week is concentrated almost entirely in intercity transport, not in being somewhere.

FAQ

What are the exact Golden Week 2027 dates? Thursday April 29 (Shōwa Day) through Wednesday May 5 (Children's Day). Friday April 30 is a normal working day, and May 1–2 is the weekend.

Is Golden Week 2027 longer than usual? Functionally, yes. Because only one working day sits inside the block, a single day of leave produces a seven-day run — so participation is higher than in years where the holidays scatter.

When do shinkansen reservations open for Golden Week 2027? Exactly one month before your travel date. For April 29 departures, that's March 29; for May 5, April 5. Popular routes sell out the same morning.

Can I still see cherry blossoms during Golden Week 2027? Not on the mainland — Tokyo and Kyoto finish in early April. Hokkaido peaks in early May and does overlap, but that's also why it's crowded that week.

Are shops and restaurants closed during Golden Week? Mostly no. Banks and government offices close on the holidays, but retail, restaurants, and attractions generally stay open — many do their best business of the year. Some small rural businesses close for the full week.

When should I travel instead if I want to avoid it? Late April before the 29th, or after May 6. Same weather, a fraction of the crowds and cost. Mid-May in particular is one of the better-value windows in the Japanese travel year.
