The Standard Japan 10 is our list series: ten picks, built from public data, with the method printed so you can check every one.

Most visitors find out about Japan's holiday rushes on the platform. Three times a year, the whole country travels on the same few days: to family homes at New Year and Obon, and on holiday in Golden Week. On those days the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trains fill a month in advance, unreserved cars run standing-room only, and hotel prices go to peak across the country, not just in the tourist cities.

These are the ten days in 2027 when it is worst. If your dates are flexible, travel a day either side. If they aren't, book the moment seats go on sale.

How we picked them

We used three public sources:

  1. JR's season calendars. JR rates every day of the year as peak, busy, normal or quiet, and charges more for reserved seats on busier days (¥400 extra on peak days, ¥200 on busy days, ¥200 less on quiet days). There are two calendars: one for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen (Tokyo–Osaka and west) and one for JR East lines (Tokyo to the north, Nagano and Kanazawa). In 2027, sixteen days are rated peak on both. Every day on this list is one of them.
  2. JR's own rush-day reports. Before each holiday, JR Central publishes the day reservations are heaviest in each direction. Where an earlier year had the same weekday layout as 2027, we used its pattern to pick the outbound and return peaks.
  3. The Cabinet Office holiday list, for which days are public holidays in 2027.

The JR calendars and holiday dates were checked on 16 October 2026 and are the same data behind our holiday & crowd calendar, where you can check any day.

The ten days

1. Saturday 2 January: New Year return

The New Year break for most workers in 2026–27 runs to Sunday 3 January, so the return starts on the Saturday. Both JR calendars rate it peak, and the Nozomi runs all-reserved, with no unreserved cars, from 25 December to 5 January. Seats go on sale at 10:00 on 2 December 2026.

2. Sunday 3 January: the last day of the break

The heaviest return day. In 2021–22, when the break also ended on 3 January, JR Central's return peak was 3 January. Seats go on sale on 3 December 2026. If you can wait, Tuesday 5 January is rated normal on the Tokaido Shinkansen, and Wednesday 6 January is quiet.

3. Saturday 1 May: Golden Week outbound

Golden Week 2027 is Showa Day on Thursday 29 April, then five days off from Saturday 1 to Wednesday 5 May. The layout is the same as 2026's (Saturday 2 to Wednesday 6 May), and in 2026 JR Central's outbound reservation peak was that first Saturday; in 2025 it was Saturday 3 May. Expect the morning trains out of Tokyo to fill first. Seats go on sale on 1 April. See our Golden Week 2027 guide for what else to book.

4. Tuesday 4 May: the return begins

In 2026's identical layout, JR Central's return reservation peak was the second-to-last day of the run, Tuesday 5 May. In 2027 that's Tuesday 4 May. Seats go on sale on 4 April.

5. Wednesday 5 May: the last day of Golden Week

Children's Day and the final day off. Returning trains stay full all afternoon and evening. Seats go on sale on 5 April. On the Tokaido Shinkansen, the day after, Thursday 6 May, drops straight to quiet.

6. Wednesday 11 August: Mountain Day and the Obon exodus

Obon is the mid-August week when Japan goes home. In 2027 the Mountain Day holiday falls on Wednesday 11 August, and JR rates the 10th and 11th as peak on the Tokaido Shinkansen, then only busy from the 12th to the 14th. In 2022, when Mountain Day fell on a Thursday, JR Central's outbound peak was the holiday itself. Seats go on sale on 11 July.

7. Sunday 15 August: Obon return

The return rush starts on the Sunday. In Obon 2026, JR East put the return peak on the Saturday and Sunday at the end of the holiday, 15 and 16 August. Seats go on sale on 15 July.

8. Monday 16 August: the end of Obon

The last day before most people go back to work, and the second of the two return peaks JR has marked. Seats go on sale on 16 July. On the Tokaido Shinkansen, Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 August are rated normal, but JR East rates every day from 10 to 19 August as peak.

9. Wednesday 29 December: the year-end exodus

The 2027 year-end falls on the same weekdays as 2021, when JR Central's Shinkansen outbound peak was Wednesday 29 December. Seats go on sale on 29 November 2027. Government offices close from 29 December to 3 January, and many companies follow the same dates, so this is the first full day of the rush.

10. Thursday 30 December: the second exodus day

In 2021 this was JR Central's outbound peak for limited express trains, and both JR calendars rate it peak in 2027. Seats go on sale on 30 November 2027. Monday 27 December is rated busy on the Tokaido Shinkansen and quiet on JR East.

Read the "main flow" column against your own direction. The rush is people leaving Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya on the outbound days and coming back on the return days, so a visitor heading into Tokyo on 1 May has an easier time than one leaving it.

Close calls

Six more days are peak on both calendars but didn't make the ten: Wednesday 28 April, Thursday 29 April (Showa Day), Friday 30 April, Sunday 2 and Monday 3 May, and Tuesday 10 August. They are still bad days for long-distance trains, just not where JR's past reports put the worst of the rush. The September holidays are busy in 2027 but have no days rated peak.

What to do if you have to travel on one

  • Book at 10:00 one month before. Seats for every train open at the same moment, online and at ticket machines. With JR Central's Smart EX you can apply earlier, and the seats are assigned when sales open.
  • Go early in the morning or late in the evening. JR Central's reports single out the morning trains out of Tokyo on outbound peak days.
  • Use the Hikari or Kodama if you have to go unreserved. On days the Nozomi is all-reserved, those trains still have unreserved cars. Expect to stand on peak days.
  • Book hotels first. At Golden Week and New Year, rooms in Kyoto, Hakone and the onsen towns go before the train seats do.
  • Check the whole trip. Our trip builder flags holidays and peak days on each leg once you add an arrival date, and the crowd calendar shows the quiet days on either side.

FAQ

What is the single busiest travel day in Japan? It changes with the calendar each year. JR's reports usually put the biggest outbound day on the first Saturday of Golden Week or the start of Obon, and the biggest return day on the last day of the New Year or Obon break. In 2027 those fall on 1 May, 11 August, 3 January and 16 August.

Are these days bad for flights and roads too? Usually, because the same people are travelling, but this list is based on the rail data only. Check the airline or expressway operator's own forecast for those.

Will JR's calendars change? JR publishes each year's season calendar in advance, and the 2027 calendars are already out. What is still to come is JR's reservation report for each holiday, published a few weeks before it. We'll update this page when they're out.
