Japan in December 2026: Illuminations, Weather, New Year Crowds, and Tips

December splits into two Japans. The first three weeks are winter lights, department-store glitter, and — in a warm year — the last maple leaves in Kansai. The final days are year-end parties, sold-out trains, and New Year’s eve leading into hatsumode shrine crowds.

Weather in December

Tokyo: often 5–12°C by day, near freezing some nights. Dry air, brilliant skies, wind that cuts.

Kyoto: colder mornings in the basin; temple stone holds the chill.

Hokkaido / Alps: real winter — snow gear if you leave the cities.

Early December: late foliage + lights

Tokyo by December is mostly past peak maple; the story becomes lights, winter food, and clear Fuji odds on cold days (Mt. Fuji day trip).

Illuminations worth planning around

Highest-yield evenings: Marunouchi, Midtown, Roppongi Hills area, and a neighborhood stroll rather than trying to hit every sponsored tunnel in one night.

Tip: go on a weeknight right after sunset; weekend peak hours are shoulder-to-shoulder.

Many restaurants, smaller shops, and offices close or run short hours. Convenience stores and major stations keep running; fancy dinner plans do not.

Trains and shinkansen around Dec 31–Jan 3 are busy with domestic travelers. Reserve seats.
