Most guides still file Kobe Luminarie under "December in Kansai". It moved. It now runs at the end of January, and the 2027 edition is 29 January to 7 February. If your trip is in December, Osaka is where the lights are, and two of them are worth planning a night around.

Midosuji Illumination: any night in November or December

Midosuji is Osaka's main north–south avenue, and from 3 November to 31 December 2026 the ginkgo trees along it are lit from the Hanshin-mae crossing in Umeda to the Namba-nishiguchi crossing. The lights come on at about 17:00 and stay on until 1:00, so this is the one display you can fit around dinner rather than plan dinner around.

You don't need to walk the whole avenue. The Midosuji subway line runs directly beneath it, so you can ride to Shinsaibashi or Hommachi, come up, and walk a few blocks in either direction. Go in late November if you can: the ginkgo leaves are usually still yellow behind the lights, which looks better than the bare branches of late December.

OSAKA Hikari no Renaissance: 11 to 25 December only

This is the big set piece, and it runs for just 15 days, from 11 to 25 December 2026, on Nakanoshima, from around Osaka City Hall to Nakanoshima Park. It includes projection mapping and larger installations than Midosuji. Hours vary by display, and the city says some of it starts as early as 3 November, so check the official Hikari no Kyoen site the day you go.

Nakanoshima is a short walk from Yodoyabashi station on the Midosuji line, so one evening can cover both: Nakanoshima first, then walk south down Midosuji. Weekends close to 25 December are the most crowded nights.

Kobe Luminarie: late January, not December

The 32nd Kobe Luminarie runs from Friday 29 January to Sunday 7 February 2027. Luminarie started in 1995 as a memorial for the Great Hanshin earthquake, and it now runs close to the 17 January anniversary rather than in December.

There are three sites: Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi park next to Kobe City Hall, and the old Foreign Settlement, centred on the plaza in front of the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Kobe head office building. Most of it is free. Part of the Meriken Park site is a ticketed area:

On the day¥1,000¥1,500

Kobe has not announced the hours or the designs yet; it said details would come in the autumn. Weekday evenings early in the run are the quietest. Sannomiya is about 25 minutes from Osaka by JR, so you can stay in Osaka and go for the evening; see the Kobe travel guide for the rest of the city.

Planning a December evening in Osaka

  • One night, both displays (11–25 December): Yodoyabashi → Nakanoshima → walk south along Midosuji to Shinsaibashi → dinner in Dotonbori.
  • Any night 3 November – 31 December: ride the Midosuji line to Shinsaibashi or Hommachi and walk a stretch of the avenue. It's free, and the lights stay on until 1:00.
  • Kobe Luminarie: plan it as an evening from Osaka between 29 January and 7 February, and buy the advance ticket if you want the Meriken Park area.

Hours shift with weather and crowds, so check them on the day. You will want working data for that and for the walk itself: a Japan eSIM (Airalo or Saily) installed before you fly is the simplest way.

If you are basing yourself in Osaka for the lights, Umeda and Namba sit at the two ends of the Midosuji display; search Osaka hotels on Rakuten Travel and compare the two, or see where to stay in Osaka.

For Tokyo's lights, see Tokyo Christmas illuminations 2026; for the rest of the month, Japan in December.
