Sapporo in December 2026: Lights, Christmas Market, Snow
White Illumination and the Munich Christmas Market run 20 Nov–25 Dec on Odori. December weather, Mt Moiwa at night, skiing and New Year closures.

December is the month when Sapporo looks most like a Christmas card and costs least to visit in winter. The lights are up along Odori Park, the German-style Christmas market is open, and the city has its first real snow, but the February Snow Festival crowds and hotel prices are still two months away.
The catch is the cold, and the pavements. Plan for ice underfoot, not just low temperatures.

Dates are from Sapporo's official tourism site and Hokkaido's tourism organisation, checked in October 2026. The 2026 lighting hours have not been published yet. Last winter the lights ran from 16:30 to 22:00, so plan on early evening and confirm the times nearer the date.

White Illumination and the Christmas market
The Sapporo White Illumination began in 1981 and is the city's main winter light show. It's free and spread across several streets in the centre. The biggest section, in Odori Park, comes down after 25 December. The Ekimae-dori section, along the avenue between Sapporo Station and Odori, stays up until 11 February 2027, so it overlaps with the Snow Festival.
The Munich Christmas Market is set up in Odori Park 2-chome from 20 November to 25 December, open from 11:00 to 21:00, with last orders at 20:45. It sells mulled wine, German food and Christmas ornaments from wooden stalls, a few minutes' walk from the TV Tower.
The two are next to each other, so a single evening covers both. Go at dusk, around 16:00 to 17:00, then walk the length of Odori Park. Weekday evenings are noticeably quieter than weekends, and the last weekend before Christmas is the busiest.

December weather: dress for ice
Sapporo's long-term December averages, from the Japan Meteorological Agency:
| December average | |
|---|---|
| Daily high | 2.0°C |
| Daily low | −4.0°C |
| Snowfall over the month | 113 cm |
| Sunshine | 83 hours |
What that means in practice:
- Footwear matters most. Pavements are packed snow and ice. Wear waterproof boots with deep tread. Many shops and convenience stores in the city sell slip-on grips.
- Dress in layers. Underground walkways, trains and shops are well heated, so a warm coat over a light layer works better than thick sweaters.
- It gets dark early. The sun sets around 16:00. Do daytime sights in the morning and save the lights for the evening.
Much of the centre is linked underground. Chi-ka-ho, the underground walkway between Sapporo Station and Odori, and Pole Town, which runs on to Susukino, let you cross the city without going outside.
Mt Moiwa at night
The night view from Mt Moiwa is the other December classic, and it's clearest on cold, dry nights. The Mt Moiwa Ropeway runs on winter hours from December to March:
| Winter hours | Last ride up | |
|---|---|---|
| Ropeway (base to mid-station) | 11:00 – 22:00 | 21:30 |
| Mini cable car (mid-station to summit) | 11:10 – 21:50 | 21:40 |
A return ticket to the summit on both is ¥2,100 for adults. Both are closed on 31 December and 1 January, and they stop in bad weather, so check the operator's site before you go. For the rest of the city, see the top 10 things to do in Sapporo.
Skiing from the city
You don't need to go to Niseko to ski in December. Sapporo Kokusai, the nearest large ski area to the city, plans to open for the 2026–27 season on 20 November 2026 and run until 5 May 2027. Early-season conditions depend on snowfall, so check what is open before you book. For a full ski trip, see Niseko and the best ski resorts in Japan.
Getting there and around
From New Chitose Airport, the JR Rapid Airport train reaches Sapporo Station in 33 to 37 minutes for ¥1,230. See New Chitose Airport to Sapporo for the reserved seats and what changes when it snows.
Snow sometimes delays trains and flights, and you will want to check the line status, the light-up times and Google Maps on foot. Install a Japan eSIM (Airalo or Saily) before you fly. Cold also drains phone batteries quickly, so carry a power bank and keep the phone in an inside pocket.
Otaru is on the same train line, about 40 minutes beyond Sapporo, and its canal is at its best under snow.
Christmas and New Year
Christmas in Japan is a working day, and the Odori lights and the Christmas market both end on 25 December. From about 29 December to 3 January, many restaurants, museums and smaller shops close for New Year, and the Mt Moiwa ropeway shuts on 31 December and 1 January. If you want everything open, go in the first three weeks of December. If you'll be there for New Year, see New Year in Japan.
The Snow Festival is a different trip, in February: see Sapporo Snow Festival 2027.
