New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: Train, Bus or Niseko
The JR Rapid Airport takes 33–37 minutes to Sapporo for ¥1,230, six an hour. When the bus is worth it, the ¥800 reserved seat, and what changes in snow.

For most people landing at New Chitose, the answer is short: take the train. The JR station is under the domestic terminal, and Sapporo Station is half an hour away.
The decisions that actually matter are the small ones. Is a reserved seat worth ¥800? When does the bus win? And if you're going skiing, have you booked a bus that takes reservations only?
For the city itself, see things to do in Sapporo and the Hokkaido travel guide. In February, the Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 runs 4–11 February.

The answer, by where you're going
| Going to… | Take | Time | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sapporo Station | JR Rapid Airport | 33 min (Special Rapid) / 37 min (Rapid) | ¥1,230 |
| Sapporo, with a guaranteed seat | JR Rapid Airport, u-Seat car | Same | ¥1,230 + ¥800 (ticketless) or ¥1,000 |
| Otaru | JR Rapid Airport (direct) | From 73 min | — |
| Hotel on the airport bus route | Airport bus to central Sapporo | Slower than the train | ¥1,500 |
| Niseko | Reserved seasonal ski bus | About 3.5 hours | About ¥6,000 (last season) |
Train times, fare and seat prices are from JR Hokkaido. Bus fare from the April 2026 revision. Niseko bus details are from Chuo Bus's 2025–26 season.
The JR Rapid Airport
The Rapid Airport is the default. JR Hokkaido runs six trains an hour through the day: one Special Rapid, three Rapids and two Section Rapids.
| Train | Fastest to Sapporo |
|---|---|
| Special Rapid | 33 minutes |
| Rapid | 37 minutes |
| Section Rapid (more stops) | 43 minutes |
The fare is ¥1,230, and you can tap an IC card: Hokkaido's Kitaca, or a Suica from Tokyo (see the IC card guide). The trains continue past Sapporo to Otaru, from 73 minutes direct from the airport. Trains run late: there's a 23:21 departure from New Chitose.

Is the u-Seat worth it?
Each Rapid Airport has a reserved car, the u-Seat. It costs ¥1,000 on top of the fare, or ¥800 if you book it ticketless.
It's worth it in two situations: you have a large suitcase or ski bag, or you land at the same time as several other flights. The unreserved cars are ordinary commuter-style seating, and at busy times that can mean standing for half an hour with your luggage.
The airport bus
The airport bus to central Sapporo costs ¥1,500 for adults since 1 April 2026, when the operators raised it from ¥1,300. You don't need a reservation, and you can pay by contactless card.
It's slower than the train and runs on roads, which matters in snow. Take it only when it actually saves you a transfer: when your hotel is beside one of its stops and well away from Sapporo Station.
Arriving on an international flight
The JR station is under the domestic terminal. From the international terminal, you walk through the connecting building to the domestic side and down to the station. Allow a few extra minutes for it, especially with luggage.
Snow
Hokkaido winters are the reason many people fly here, and they also affect the trip in from the airport. Heavy snow can delay or suspend trains, and roads slow down as well. Before you leave the arrivals hall on a snowy day, check JR Hokkaido's operating information. If the trains are down, the bus queue is where everyone else will be heading too.
That check happens on your phone, at the airport, minutes after landing. The same goes for booking a ticketless u-Seat or finding the bus stop. A Japan eSIM installed at home (Airalo or Saily) is working as soon as you land; see how to set up an eSIM in Japan.
Going straight to Niseko
Niseko is a different trip: a reserved seasonal ski bus of about three and a half hours. Last season (2025–26), Chuo Bus ran it from mid-December to late March for ¥6,000 one-way. Reservations were required, closing at 18:00 the evening before, with a handful of departures from the airport each day.
When we checked on 1 October 2026, Chuo Bus hadn't yet posted its 2026–27 details. Book your seat as soon as they appear and your flight is fixed, because there are only a few departures a day. For where to stay and how the resort areas differ, see the Niseko guide.
