New Chitose Airport to Niseko: Bus, Train or Transfer
New Chitose or Sapporo to Niseko, winter 2026–27: ski buses from ¥6,000 in about 2½ hours, the slower train via Otaru, private transfers and rental cars.

Niseko is west of New Chitose Airport, on the far side of the mountains, and in winter the road goes over snowy passes. In the ski season the ski bus is the answer for most people: you leave from the airport, your board goes in the hold, and you get off at the Hirafu Welcome Center two and a half hours later without changing anything.
The other three ways (a private transfer, the train and a rental car) each make sense for someone, and this guide says who.

The ski buses
Hokkaido Resort Liner
Run by Hokkaido Access Network. For 2026–27 it runs from 1 December 2026 to 30 March 2027 from the airport, and from 2 December to 31 March in the other direction. The adult fare to Niseko is ¥6,000 one way, ¥5,000 for children aged 3 to 11. The company's own page puts the trip at about two and a half hours to the Hirafu Welcome Center; some buses stop at Rusutsu on the way, which adds about ten minutes.
Every trip needs a reservation, made on the Hokkaido Access Network website. Each passenger can put one set of skis or a snowboard, in a bag, and one other piece of luggage in the hold.
White Liner
Run by Good Sports. For 2026–27 it runs from 12 December 2026 to 23 March 2027, nonstop between the domestic terminal at New Chitose and the Hirafu Welcome Center, with one rest stop at Bifue Pass. The trip takes about two and a half hours.
The standard adult fare is ¥7,000. Booking online saves 20% until 31 October 2026 (¥5,600) and 15% after that (¥5,950). Online booking is ticketless and takes credit cards only, and closes at 16:00 the day before you travel. The same allowance applies: one set of ski or snowboard gear and one other bag. Two or more bags, or something very large, may be refused.
Which bus? If your flight lands early in December or late in March, only the Resort Liner is running. Otherwise, book whichever has a seat at the time you land; the White Liner is ¥50 cheaper than the Resort Liner if you book it online after October, and nonstop.

Where the buses stop
Both buses end at the Hirafu Welcome Center, at the bottom of the Grand Hirafu slopes. They do not stop at individual hotels. If you're staying in upper Hirafu, a hotel shuttle or a short taxi ride finishes the trip. If you're staying at Niseko Village or Annupuri, check whether your hotel runs a pickup from the Welcome Center, or look at a private transfer instead.
Private transfer
A private car or van meets you in arrivals and drops you at your hotel door. On Kiwitaxi, the trip is quoted at about 2 hours 15 minutes for 130 km, and the cheapest car (up to four people and three bags) starts at about US$500; a minibus for seven with seven bags is about US$590. The driver waits up to 90 minutes after your scheduled landing, and standard bookings can be cancelled for a full refund up to 16 hours before.
Split between four people, that is not far off the bus fare, and you skip the walk from the Welcome Center. It is the obvious choice if your flight lands after the last bus, if you have small children, or if you're staying somewhere the buses don't go.

- Meet and greet in arrivals
- Driver waits up to 90 minutes after landing
- Free cancellation up to 16 hours before
By train
The train is the cheapest way and the slowest. Take the JR Rapid Airport from New Chitose to Otaru, about 72 minutes, then a local train on the Hakodate Line to Kutchan or Niseko Station, about 90 minutes more. Niseko United's access page warns that services on the Otaru side are limited, so a missed connection can mean a long wait. From Kutchan or Niseko Station you still need a bus or taxi to the slopes.
It works if you travel light, or outside the months the ski buses run. With a ski bag in January it is a long afternoon.

Rental car
Driving is about the same time as the bus in good conditions, and gives you Rusutsu, onsen and supermarkets on your own schedule. But the route crosses mountain passes, and winter driving in Hokkaido means snow, ice at night and whiteouts. Only drive if you have real snow experience, and check that the car has winter tyres. You'll also need an International Driving Permit in the right format; see renting a car in Japan.
If that's you, compare New Chitose Airport rental cars on DiscoverCars and book before you fly.

From Sapporo
If you're spending a night in Sapporo first, there are direct buses from the city too, but fewer of them.
- Hokkaido Resort Liner runs one or two buses a day from the Sapporo area to Niseko in winter, according to the company. Book on the same site as the airport bus.
- Chuo Bus ran two buses a morning last winter from the North Exit of JR Sapporo Station (with a pickup at Makomanai subway station), stopping at Hirafu, Hilton Niseko Village and Annupuri, for ¥6,000 one way or ¥10,000 return. Niseko United says the 2026–27 timetable is being updated in the autumn.
- White Liner runs a new bus from Hirafu back to Sapporo Station at 15:00 this season, useful for the way home.
- Private transfer: Kiwitaxi quotes Sapporo to Niseko from about US$520 per car.
- Train: Sapporo to Otaru takes about 32 minutes, then the same local train to Kutchan or Niseko.

When the season runs
Niseko United's four ski areas open on 28 November 2026. Niseko Village closes on 4 April 2027, Hanazono on 11 April, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri on 5 May. The ski buses run for the core of that, December to March, so if you're coming at the very start or end of the season, plan on the train or a transfer.
The all-mountain lift pass costs ¥13,500 a day for an adult in peak season (24 December to 28 February). For what that buys, and how Niseko compares with the Japan Alps, see Niseko vs Hakuba vs Nozawa Onsen.
