Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen: Shinkansen to Iiyama, Then the Bus
Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen in winter: shinkansen to Iiyama, then the 25-minute Nozawa Onsen Liner. Where the bus leaves, how to pay, and airport shuttles.

Of the big ski resorts in Japan, Nozawa Onsen is the easiest to reach from Tokyo. There's no flight and no long transfer: one shinkansen to Iiyama and a 25-minute bus, and you're in a village with 13 free public bathhouses at the bottom of the slopes.

Shinkansen to Iiyama
Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno to Iiyama, one stop past Nagano. Check the train name when you book: the Hakutaka stops at Iiyama, but the faster Kagayaki does not, and goes straight through to Toyama. On a Hakutaka the trip takes about 1 hour 40 to 1 hour 50 minutes, depending on the train.

Iiyama to Nozawa Onsen
The Nozawa Onsen ski resort lists two buses from Iiyama Station:
- Nozawa Onsen Liner (express): about 25 minutes direct to the village. It leaves from bus stop 4, on the Chikuma River exit side of the station. Buy your ticket at the machine next to the stop. You can't reserve a seat.
- Nagaden bus (town service): about 40 minutes, via Iiyama town and Kijimadaira. It leaves from bus stop 2. Take a ticket when you board and pay the driver when you get off.
The Liner doesn't run every few minutes, so check its timetable and line up your train with it, especially for the trip back. The ski resort also says Uber was available in Nozawa last winter.
From Narita or Haneda
In the ski season, airport shuttles run from Narita and Haneda direct to Nozawa Onsen. One booking site for the 2026–27 season lists fares from about ¥16,200 from Narita and ¥14,900 to ¥17,600 from Haneda, depending on the time, with services from late December to early March. It's the dearest way per person, but there's no change of train with skis.
Book your room early for the Fire Festival
The Dosojin Fire Festival on 15 January is one of the most famous fire festivals in Japan, and the reason the village fills up that week. In 2025 and 2026, entry to the festival ground was limited to guests staying in Nozawa Onsen and village residents, for safety. The 2027 rules hadn't been announced when we checked in October 2026, but plan on needing a room in the village that night rather than a day trip from Iiyama or Nagano.
