Tokyo Jazz Bars 2026: Kissaten, Live Rooms and Late Nights
Tokyo jazz in 2026: listening cafes Eagle and DUG, live at Shinjuku Pit Inn, NARU and JZ Brat, and Blue Note and Cotton Club for the big names.
Tokyo's jazz splits two ways. The jazz kissa is a cafe built around a record collection and a serious sound system, where you come to listen. The live rooms range from basements where Japanese players come up to dinner clubs booking international acts.
Listening cafes
Eagle (Yotsuya). Open since 1967. From opening (11:30 on weekdays, 14:00 at weekends) until 6pm, talking isn't allowed: you come to listen to records. After 6pm it becomes a bar and conversation is fine.
DUG (Shinjuku 3-chome). Founded in 1961 by the jazz photographer Hozumi Nakadaira, and now a jazz cafe and bar where you can talk. Open 12:00–23:30; from 18:30 it's bar time, with a ¥550 table charge. 3-15-12 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku · 03-3354-7776
Live rooms
Shinjuku Pit Inn. Open since 1965 and one of the most important rooms in Japanese jazz. There are two sets a day: the afternoon set (from 14:00) is where young players start out, and the evening set starts at 19:30. B1, 2-12-4 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku
NARU (Ochanomizu). A jazz cafe from 1969 that became a live house, a minute from Ochanomizu Station. Lunch and cafe in the day, live music with dinner from 18:00.
JZ Brat (Shibuya). On the 2nd floor of the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel since 2001. Live sets with French-leaning food.
Blue Note Tokyo (Minami-Aoyama) and Cotton Club (Marunouchi). The two big-name clubs, run by the same group. Music charges are roughly ¥5,000–10,000 depending on the act, plus food, drinks and a 10% service charge. Book ahead.
