Best Time to Visit Japan: Avoid Crowds, Save Money, See Cherry Blossoms (2026)

Correction, 7 October 2026: an earlier version said 2025's cherry blossoms were delayed and that Tokyo's 2026 blossoms came out around 23–28 March. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded Tokyo's full bloom on 30 March 2025, one day early, and on 28 March 2026.

The best time to visit Japan is late March to mid-April for cherry blossoms, or mid-October to late November for autumn leaves. Both seasons bring crowds and hotel prices 30–60% above the quiet months. If price matters more than scenery, go in January or February (outside New Year week) or in June, when hotels are cheapest.

Which of those is right for you depends on what you care about most: weather, crowds or cost. The table gives the short version. The sections below explain each season.

Japan by season

Cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April)

This is Japan's most photographed season. Parks and riverbanks that are empty the rest of the year fill with hanami picnics under the blossoms, and the effect is hard to match anywhere else. It also comes with costs you should plan for:

• Every well-known park, shrine path and riverside is far busier than at any other time of year.
• Hotel rooms can cost 30–60% more than the same rooms in February.
• Popular restaurants need booking two to four weeks ahead.
• The bloom date moves from year to year. Tokyo's full bloom fell on 22 March in 2023, 4 April in 2024, 30 March in 2025 and 28 March in 2026, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Full bloom in any one city lasts about a week.

If you have flexible dates and can book three to four months ahead, late March is a good bet. If your dates are fixed months in advance, the bloom may come before or after you arrive. Autumn leaves (mid-October to late November)

Autumn is the better choice for many travelers. The maples (momiji) turn red and gold from Hokkaido in October to Kyoto and Tokyo in late November, so the season moves south over six to eight weeks instead of the single week or two of the cherry blossoms. Skies are clearer than in spring and temperatures of 12–20°C suit long days on foot. Crowds are heavy at the famous spots, but less extreme than in cherry blossom season.

Good places to see the leaves include Arashiyama and Tofukuji in Kyoto, Nikko in Tochigi, and almost any forested mountain area. For this year's dates, see the autumn 2026 calendar.

May and early June

For a balance of weather, crowds and price, this is our pick.

Avoid the first few days of May. Golden Week, a run of national holidays from late April into early May, is the busiest domestic travel period of the year, and prices peak with it. The second and third weeks of May are a different trip: 18–24°C, mostly clear, quieter, and cheaper. It is a good time for hiking and cycling.

Early June is similar, with a rising chance of rain before the rainy season begins.

Rainy season (mid-June to mid-July)

Tsuyu, the rainy season, has a worse reputation than it deserves. It brings frequent showers and high humidity, not constant rain, and mornings are often dry. Hydrangeas bloom in temple gardens, the rice fields turn green, and Kyoto's temples are quieter than at any other time between April and November.

Hotel prices are among the lowest of the year. If you don't mind an umbrella, it is good value. Our rainy season guide has the dates by city.

Summer (late July and August)

Japanese summers are hard going. Tokyo and Osaka regularly pass 35°C with high humidity, which is uncomfortable for anyone not used to tropical heat.

Summer is also when Japan is at its most festive:

• Obon in mid-August, with bon odori dances and lantern events.
• Fireworks festivals (hanabi taikai) along rivers and bays on summer evenings.
• Neighborhood festivals (matsuri) through July and August, with food stalls and processions.

Plan outdoor sightseeing for before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m., and spend the middle of the day in museums, department stores and restaurants.

Hokkaido is the exception. Summers there are mild, around 20–25°C, and July and August are its best months.

Winter (December to February)

Outside the ski resorts such as Niseko, Hakuba and Furano, winter is Japan's quietest season. Hotels are at their cheapest, the big sights are less crowded, and the dry, clear air makes the cities pleasant to walk.

• Illuminations. Cities put up winter light displays from November, most running through Christmas and some into February.
• Onsen. A hot spring bath with snow falling around you is one of the best things Japan offers.
• Skiing. Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps get some of the best powder snow in the world.
• Quieter sights. Temples, shrines and museums in Kyoto and Tokyo are far less busy.

New Year week, roughly 28 December to 3 January, is the exception. Domestic travel peaks, many restaurants and shops close, and prices rise. The rest of winter is good value.

FAQ: Best Time to Visit Japan

When is cherry blossom season in Tokyo? Usually late March to early April. Over 2023–2026, Tokyo's full bloom came between 22 March and 4 April. The 1991–2020 average is 31 March.

What month is the cheapest to visit Japan? January and February, outside New Year week, have the lowest hotel prices and the smallest crowds. June, during the rainy season, is also cheap.

When should I avoid Japan? Golden Week (late April to early May) is the busiest and most expensive domestic travel period. Obon in mid-August is also very busy, and New Year week brings closures and high prices.

How many days do I need in Japan? Ten days to two weeks is comfortable for a first visit: Tokyo for four or five days, Kyoto for three, and two or three other places. One week is enough for Tokyo and Kyoto only.

Is Japan good in winter? Yes, especially if you dislike crowds. Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are cold but mostly dry in winter, and heavy snow in Tokyo is rare.

When is the best time to visit Kyoto? Mid to late November, for the autumn leaves in the temple gardens. Late March and early April, for the cherry blossoms, is a close second but much more crowded. August is very hot.

Does Japan have a typhoon season? Yes. Typhoons are most likely from August to October, and September is often the peak. They can cancel flights and trains at short notice, so travel insurance matters most in these months.

Can I see Mount Fuji from Tokyo? Yes, on clear days, from high buildings in the city or from the Shinkansen. Winter, when the air is driest, gives the clearest views. In summer Fuji is often hidden by haze.
