Best Day Trips from Osaka: Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Koyasan

Osaka is the easiest base in Kansai for day trips. Kyoto, Kobe and Nara are all under 40 minutes away by train, so you can sleep in one hotel and go somewhere different each day. The further trips, Himeji and Koyasan, need an early start.

Kyoto

JR Special Rapid from Osaka Station, about 30 minutes, ¥580.

Kyoto is too big for one day, so pick one area and stay in it. For a first visit that usually means Higashiyama: Kiyomizu-dera (¥500), the slopes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, Yasaka Shrine and Gion. Arashiyama in the west and Kinkakuji in the north are each a day of their own. See the Kyoto travel guide.

Nara

Kintetsu from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara, about 36 minutes, ¥680.

From Kintetsu-Nara station it's a short walk to Nara Park and its deer, then on to Todaiji, where the Great Buddha Hall costs ¥800, and the lantern-lined approach to Kasuga Taisha. Hold deer crackers out of sight until you're ready: the deer are wild and will push. Details in the Nara day trip guide.

Kobe

JR from Osaka to Sannomiya, about 22 minutes, ¥420.

Kobe is compact. Walk uphill from Sannomiya to Kitano's old Western merchants' houses, eat in Nankinmachi (Chinatown), and finish at the harbour. Kobe beef is the reason many people come; set aside a real budget for lunch if you want it. See the Kobe travel guide.

Himeji

JR Special Rapid from Osaka, about an hour.

Himeji Castle is one of the few Japanese castles whose keep was never rebuilt in concrete, and the station sits at the end of a straight avenue that leads to it. Since March 1, 2026 the castle has charged ¥2,500 for adults who don't live in Himeji (residents still pay ¥1,000, and under-18s go free). Kokoen, the garden next to it, is a good second stop. Go early; tour groups arrive mid-morning.

Koyasan (Mount Koya)

Nankai from Namba, then the cable car: about two hours each way.

The temple town on Mount Koya is worth the trip, but four hours of travel makes for a rushed day. Okunoin, the cemetery path through old cedars to Kobo Daishi's mausoleum, is the part not to miss. If you can, stay a night in a temple instead; see the Koyasan temple stay guide.

Lake Biwa and Hikone

JR to Otsu in about 40 minutes; Hikone is roughly an hour.

Shiga is quieter than anywhere else on this list. Hikone Castle has one of Japan's few original keeps, with the Genkyu-en garden below it. Otsu is the stop for the lakefront itself.

Wakayama

JR limited express Kuroshio from Shin-Osaka, about an hour.

Wakayama Castle (a 1958 rebuild on the original site) and the local ramen are the reasons to go. Ide Shoten, open since 1953, is the shop the "Ide-style" pork-and-soy broth is named after.

FAQ

Which day trip should I do first? Kyoto if you have one day, Nara if you have a half day. Both are under 40 minutes away.

How much is Himeji Castle now? ¥2,500 for adults who don't live in Himeji, since March 1, 2026.

Can I do Koyasan as a day trip? You can, but it's about two hours each way. An overnight in a temple works better.
