Fukuoka Airport to Hakata & Tenjin: Subway, Shuttle, Bus
Fukuoka's subway reaches Hakata in about 5 minutes, but only from the domestic terminal. International arrivals take a free shuttle or a direct bus.

Fukuoka has one of the shortest airport-to-city trips in Japan. Hakata Station is two subway stops from the airport. The catch is that it's two stops from the domestic terminal, and most visitors from abroad land at the international one.
Once you know that, the rest is easy. Here's how to get from either terminal to Hakata or Tenjin.
For the city itself, see the Fukuoka travel guide. Arriving elsewhere? We cover Kansai Airport, New Chitose (Sapporo) and Narita vs Haneda.

Times from Fukuoka Airport's and Fukuoka City Subway's official pages.
From the domestic terminal: the subway
The subway station, Fukuokakūkō (福岡空港), is at the domestic terminal, and it's the start of the Airport Line:
- Hakata Station: about 5 minutes
- Tenjin: about 10 minutes
- Trains run roughly every 4 to 8 minutes, from about 5:30am to 12:25am
You can tap a Suica or other major IC card at the gates. Fukuoka's own card, Hayakaken, works the same way. If you'll ride the subway several times in a day, the one-day pass is ¥640 for adults.
From the international terminal: shuttle or direct bus
The subway doesn't reach the international terminal. The airport is clear about this, and it's the step that catches people out. You have two options.
Free shuttle bus, then the subway
The airport runs a free shuttle bus between the international and domestic terminals, and the ride takes about 10 minutes. At the domestic terminal, follow the signs down to the subway. The station even has a gate marked for the international shuttle bus.

This is the default if you're staying near Hakata or Tenjin, or anywhere along the Airport Line.
Direct bus to Hakata or Tenjin
Buses also run from the international terminal straight to Hakata Station (Nishitetsu) and to Hakata Station and Tenjin (HEARTS). They save the transfer, which is worth it with large suitcases, small children, or a hotel right by the bus stop. Check the operator's timetable and fare at the international terminal's bus stops, since they're less frequent than the subway.
Your phone does the work here
The shuttle-or-bus decision happens in the arrivals hall, on your phone. You'll be checking which bus leaves first, where the shuttle stop is, and how far your hotel is from Hakata or Tenjin station.
A Japan eSIM installed before you fly (Airalo or Saily) is working as soon as you land, so you don't have to rely on airport WiFi. Setup takes a few minutes: how to set up an eSIM in Japan. For the IC card side, see the Suica and Pasmo guide.
