Karuizawa Silver Week 2026: Crowds, Hotels, and What to Actually Do
Silver Week 2026 (Sep 19–23) packs Karuizawa with domestic travelers. How crowded it gets, whether to go, how to get there, and what to do once you’re there.
People ask the same thing every September: Is Karuizawa a bad idea for Silver Week? The honest answer is that it gets busy because it works. Cooler air, an easy train from Tokyo, Kyu-Karuizawa, and a big outlet mall. Japanese travelers book that combination early. The quiet forest in the brochure is not what you get that week.
Silver Week 2026 runs September 19 (Sat) through 23 (Wed) — Respect for the Aged Day, a bridging National Holiday, and Autumnal Equinox Day stacked onto a weekend. It is the first full five-day autumn holiday block since 2015. Outbound traffic usually peaks around the 19th; returns hurt on the 22nd and 23rd.

Why it fills up
September in Karuizawa usually sits around 22°C highs and 13°C lows. Tokyo can still feel like late summer; here you want a light layer. The Hokuriku Shinkansen gets you from Tokyo Station in roughly an hour to an hour twenty. That is the perfect distance for a short holiday — which is exactly why seats disappear.
Think of Hakone as the default weekend onsen trip. Karuizawa is one of the default “get out of the city” highland trips. When everyone picks the same answer, the answer becomes the crowd.
Should you go?
Go if the hotel and reserved seats are already booked, you care more about cooler air than empty sidewalks, or this is your only leave window.
Shift if you want café walk-ins, easy outlet browsing, or a rental car for hopping around town. Mid-September before the holiday — or from Sep 24 onward — usually keeps the same weather with far fewer people.
If all you want is highland cool, Karuizawa outside Silver Week often feels more like Karuizawa than Kyoto inside it. Hakone is busy the same week too.

Arrive on the 17th–18th, or stay through the 24th–25th, if you can. Same cool air, lighter streets.
Getting there
Train is the clear choice. Tokyo to Karuizawa is Asama and some Hakutaka services on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Ballpark ordinary fares in a normal season: about ¥5,600 unreserved / ¥6,130 reserved (check current prices). For Silver Week, do not gamble on unreserved cars — book both directions early on Eki-Net. The holiday problem is less delay than standing with luggage.
Driving works, but budget pain. NEXCO’s 2026 forecasts flag roughly 10 km congestion stretches on the Joshinetsu Expressway around Usui-Karuizawa and Matsuida-Myogi on peak days such as Sep 20 and 22 (live conditions change — check before you leave). Holiday expressway discounts do not apply that week. The closest exit, Usui-Karuizawa IC, often queues before town. Locals sometimes drop one exit earlier at Matsuida-Myogi IC and come in on Route 18 (hairpins; rough if anyone gets carsick). Inside Karuizawa, Prince Avenue, Route 18, and outlet parking are the bottlenecks. Park at the station or hotel, then walk or bike.
What to actually do
A crowd warning without a plan is useless. Here is what still works during the holiday.
Morning: Shiraito Falls or Kumoba Pond
Shiraito Falls fills its parking late morning. Go first, then return to town. Wear real walking shoes.
Kumoba Pond is calmer at dawn or late afternoon. Peak autumn color is usually mid-October onward, but Silver Week still draws people at midday.
Forest paths one street off the postcard spots are often quieter than anything your map app highlights first.
Afternoon: Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza
Walk the main street when shops open. Take photos early; save cafés for later so you are not stuck in the worst of the sidewalk crawl after 10am. You do not need the most Instagrammed café — a bakery half a block off the main strip is often the better Silver Week move.
Optional: Prince Shopping Plaza
Treat the outlet as a bonus, not the spine of the day. Midday parking and surrounding roads are where Karuizawa traffic often starts. Opening on a fringe day — or skipping — is fine.
Rainy September Plan B
September is one of Karuizawa’s wetter months. Keep a museum or long café stretch in your pocket, and pack a layer for evenings near 13°C.

Nature in the morning, Kyu-Karuizawa in the afternoon. Outlet only if time remains.
Falls + full Ginza street + full outlet + night drive usually breaks somewhere. Pick one thick half of the day and let the rest be light.
Guided options if you want the day handled
During Silver Week, one booked indoor plan beats four tabs of “maybe later.” These are the two we would actually use from Karuizawa:
Book in this order
- Lodging — Kyu-Karuizawa inns and brand hotels sell out first
- Reserved Shinkansen — especially afternoon returns on the 22nd–23rd
- One meal or experience — lunch reservation, soba class, or a guided day so the trip is not only queue management
- Suica / Pasmo — IC cards for trains and buses; a little cash for small shops
Already stuck in the week? Arrive the night before the 19th if you can. Morning nature, afternoon Ginza, outlet last. Bring an umbrella.
