Saily eSIM Japan: Prices, Plans and Speed Limits

Saily offers small Japan data packages from $3.99 for 1GB over seven days. That can suit a trip where hotel Wi-Fi handles most downloads and mobile data covers maps and messages between stops. It is not uniquely cheap: Airalo also sells small packages, and validity matters as much as the headline price.

It is not the right pick for everyone, and two of its limitations are easy to miss until you have already paid. This review covers both.

Correction, 11 October 2026: an earlier version said Saily runs on KDDI only and has a 30-day activation window. It uses KDDI and SoftBank, and plans now have a 180-day activation period.

Correction, 29 October 2026: removed the incorrect competitor minimum price and unsupported testing claims, corrected the Airalo comparison, and clarified unlimited speeds, phone-number options and hotspot limits. This is a comparison of published terms, not a hands-on test.

Comparing options? See the full Japan eSIM comparison for how Saily stacks up against Ubigi, Airalo, trifa, and Holafly side by side.

Compare equal validity periods. Airalo’s Japan listing includes a 1GB package for $4 over three days, as well as larger packages. Saily’s seven-day 1GB package lasts longer, but neither covers a ten-day trip without another package.

At 10GB over 30 days, Saily is $17.99 and Airalo is $18. Choose on the package terms and your itinerary rather than that one-cent difference.

Unlimited Data Has a Daily Speed Limit

Saily publishes a 5GB daily full-speed allowance, followed by speeds of up to 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. Data continues, but large uploads and video may become slower.

Our data calculator uses planning estimates, not our own network benchmarks. Use it to compare your expected total with a fixed package before paying for unlimited data.

Data Only: No SMS, No Local Number

Saily’s base Japan packages are data-only. Its separate phone-number subscription provides a US +1 number, not a Japanese number. That distinction matters when a service requires a Japanese number:

  • Japanese websites that verify by SMS will not work. Some restaurant reservation systems, ticketing sites, and delivery services text a code to a Japanese number. You cannot receive it.
  • You cannot be called on a Japanese number. Restaurants confirming a booking, a hotel calling about a late arrival, or a taxi driver trying to find you all need a different route.
  • Your home number may remain available if your carrier supports roaming and you keep that SIM active. Check charges for calls and texts; switching off mobile data does not disable voice roaming charges.

Messaging apps are unaffected. LINE, WhatsApp, iMessage, and FaceTime all run over data and work normally, and LINE is what Japan actually uses.

Network: KDDI (au) and SoftBank

Saily runs on KDDI (au) and SoftBank in Japan, through partnerships with local operators. That matters more than the price difference for some itineraries.

We have not tested comparative coverage or speeds. For ski resorts, rural driving and islands, check the operators’ coverage maps for the places you will actually visit. Our network guide explains what to compare.

What the NordVPN Pedigree Actually Buys You

Saily is made by Nord Security, and the app includes extras most travel eSIMs do not: a built-in ad blocker, web protection against malicious sites, and a virtual-location feature. Whether those are worth anything to you is personal — they are genuinely there rather than marketing, but they are not why you would choose an eSIM.

We have not tested the app or measured setup time for this review. Follow Saily’s current installation instructions for your device.

Tethering is allowed. Holafly’s Japan page currently allows 1GB of hotspot sharing per day, so its unlimited phone data should not be read as unlimited laptop data.

Buying and Activation Timing

The activation period is 180 days, which means you can buy well before you fly and switch it on when you land. There is nothing to gain by waiting, and buying at home on your own Wi-Fi is far less stressful than doing it in an arrivals hall.

The sequence:

  1. Buy online and install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi — Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.
  2. Label it "Japan" and leave it switched off.
  3. On landing, turn the Japan line on, enable data roaming for that line only, and leave your home SIM active for calls with its data off.

Our step-by-step eSIM setup guide covers the full walkthrough, and the troubleshooting guide handles the case where nothing connects after landing.

Should You Buy Saily for Japan?

Yes, if: you need a small amount of data (1–5GB), your trip is city-based, you want tethering included, and the package validity covers your stay.

Compare coverage maps if: your itinerary includes ski resorts, rural Hokkaido, the Alps, or small islands.

Compare other services if: you need a Japanese phone number. Mobal offers voice-and-data eSIMs with a Japanese number; its activation process requires a physical access code, so check delivery and identity requirements before relying on it for arrival day.

Tips for International Visitors

  • Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable before you buy. Broadly, iPhone XS and later and most flagship Androids from 2019 onward support eSIM, but a carrier-locked handset will refuse the profile even if the hardware supports it. Your home carrier can confirm the lock status, and it is not something you can resolve from Japan.
  • Keep your home SIM on for voice, data off. This is the setup that makes travel eSIMs work: your regular number stays reachable for banks and family, while data runs over the cheap local line. Switching your home line to airplane mode instead defeats the point.
  • Screenshot the QR code and the activation email before you fly. If you need to reinstall the profile — after a phone reset, or a failed install — you will need it, and you may be trying to retrieve it without working data.
  • Airport Wi-Fi at Narita and Haneda is free and reliable if activation does not go smoothly on arrival. Do not panic-buy a physical SIM at a kiosk before you have tried the airport network. See Narita vs Haneda for where to find it.
  • Buy in your home currency where possible. Saily prices in USD; if your card charges a foreign-transaction fee, that can add several percent to a $4 plan and quietly erase the price advantage over a competitor.
Narita Airport arrivals. Prepare your connection before departure rather than relying on setting it up after landing.
