Tokyo 3-Day Itinerary: First-Timers’ Plan That Actually Fits

Three days in Tokyo is enough for a strong first impression if you stop treating the city like a checklist of wards. Pick a base, do one cluster per day, and leave gaps for food and getting lost on purpose.

Stay guidance: where to stay in Tokyo. Arrival: first day in Tokyo. Longer trip: 5-day itinerary.

Before day 1

  • Hotel in Shibuya or Shinjuku
  • IC card ready — Suica/Pasmo
  • One prebooked timed ticket max
  • Offline maps of your hotel exits

Day 1: Shibuya + Harajuku (settle in)

Morning: Arrive / drop bags / espresso. Do not race to Asakusa yet.

Midday: Meiji Jingu → Harajuku backstreets (skip only Takeshita if crowds look brutal) → Omotesando walk if energy remains.

Late afternoon: Shibuya scramble + side streets. Book Shibuya Sky for sunset if you want one view — Shibuya Sky guide.

Night: Neighborhood dinner. Save Golden Gai for Day 3 unless you are based in Shinjuku already.

Goal: Orient to trains and jet lag without a hero itinerary.

Day 2: Asakusa + east Tokyo

Early: Senso-ji before 9am — Asakusa guide.

Late morning: Nakamise lightly, then side streets or Kappabashi.

Afternoon: Timed Skytree or a tea/kimono session if culture is the priority.

Night: Return west for dinner near your hotel, or stay east for a calmer evening.

Day 3: Shinjuku + one flexible block

Morning options (pick one):

  • Shinjuku Gyoen
  • teamLab timed entry — teamLab guide
  • Easy vintage/record wander in a nearby ward if you hate parks

Afternoon: Department store depachika picnic or café reset — depachika.

Evening: Omoide Yokocho → Golden Gai or a hosted food night if you want training wheels — Shinjuku guide, Tokyo at night.

What not to force into 3 days

  • Kyoto (needs its own trip segment)
  • Fuji + Disney + teamLab + Skytree all timed
  • Three day trips

If you gain a fourth day, add Mt. Fuji day trip or Hakone.

FAQ

Is 3 days enough in Tokyo? Yes for a first highlight reel. No if you want day trips and nightlife depth.

What is the best 3-day Tokyo itinerary? Neighborhood clusters: Shibuya/Harajuku, Asakusa/east, Shinjuku night — not five wards per day.

Should I buy a JR Pass for 3 days in Tokyo? Usually no. IC card + metro is enough. JR Pass math.

Can I add Mt. Fuji? Only by cutting a city day or extending to 4+ days.
