Japan 10-Day Itinerary: Tokyo, Fuji Day, Kyoto, and Osaka
A realistic 10-day Japan itinerary for first-timers: Tokyo base, one Mt. Fuji/Hakone day, Kyoto temples, Osaka food — with booking tips and what to cut.

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first Japan trip that does not feel like a hostage video of train platforms. You get Tokyo depth, one classic nature/Fuji day, Kyoto temples, and Osaka appetite — without pretending you “did Japan.”
Shorter: 7-day itinerary. Longer: 2 weeks. Bases: Tokyo · Kyoto · Osaka.

Snapshot
| Days | Where | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Tokyo | Neighborhoods, food, one timed ticket |
| 5 | Fuji / Hakone | Day trip from Tokyo (or overnight) |
| 6–8 | Kyoto | Temples, Gion, early mornings |
| 9–10 | Osaka | Food, neon, optional Nara |
Fly into Haneda/Narita; out of Kansai (KIX) when fares allow — or reverse.
Days 1–4: Tokyo
Follow the spirit of the 3-day Tokyo itinerary, then add a fourth day for whatever you cut (teamLab, Shimokitazawa, museums).
Book one: Skytree, Shibuya Sky, or teamLab — not all three.
Arrival: first day in Tokyo · Haneda to Tokyo · Narita to Tokyo
Day 5: Fuji / Hakone
Clear-sky day preferred. Kawaguchiko for photos; Hakone for onsen loop. Guide: Mt. Fuji day trip.
Return to Tokyo for one more night or overnight Hakone if you want a bath evening.
Days 6–8: Kyoto
Shinkansen in the morning. Early temples, one west or south half-day (Arashiyama or Fushimi), Gion evening manners. Details: Kyoto 3-day itinerary, what to do in Kyoto.
Optional Nara as a day from Kyoto if you cut an Osaka night — what to do in Nara.
Days 9–10: Osaka
Food first. Dotonbori at dusk, market crawl, maybe USJ only if you sacrifice other depth. What to do in Osaka.
What to cut if you must
| Temptation | Cost |
|---|---|
| Hiroshima + Miyajima | Needs 1–2 days — cut Osaka or Kyoto depth |
| Disney | Full day — cut a Tokyo neighborhood day |
| Both Kawaguchiko and Hakone | Pick one |

FAQ
Is 10 days enough for Japan? Yes for Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka with one nature day. No for “all of Japan.”
Tokyo first or Kyoto first? Match your flights. Tokyo first is the common long-haul pattern.
Should I stay overnight in Hakone? Nice if you want evening onsen; not required.
Can I do Nara and Osaka? Yes — Nara day from Kyoto or Osaka; do not stack with Arashiyama deeply the same day.
